I absolutely loved this. Potentially my second favourite Murakami novel! I cant believe it took me 3/4 of the way through the book to recognise the Great Gatsby similarities, but we’ll just pretend like I never said that..

This book was creepy (like literally have me goosebumps multiple times!!) and adventurous. Mysterious in all the perfect ways.

As is with every Murakami novel we have the typical ‘sadboy’ type. Usually I don’t care much for his main characters but with this one I rooted for them the whole time.

The ending was mad but super clever at the same time. Murakami does an incredible job at keeping the reader engaged even with the strangest or most mundane of tasks for the characters.

Murakami sir.. why are you so obsessed with writing about boobs… never fails to baffle me.

Definitely recommend but not as your first murakami novel as I think it could be a little bit of shock to the system with how this man writes and tells stories…

Ooooffff… really tough. The characters and story were resoundingly boring. I kept waiting for it to kick into over drive and blow my socks off. The (constantly implied sexual) obsession with his dead sister was beyond bizarre and upsetting…

Always loved Murakami's writings / translations. This one caters to his style of applying very unique perspectives to everyday scenarios, yet again a protagonist who loses his wife , strange personalities and peculiar behaviour. Having read quite a few of his books, those unpredictable predictable traits existed but I found nothing more beyond that for me to take away and also found the length tedious which is very uncharacteristic Murakami. I guess if this is your first Murakami, you'll love it but for the rest, I'd say this isn't his best effort.

My first Murakami book, I'm going to have to reflect on it some more. Overall, the story was engaging, great dialog, and wonderful descriptions of the people, places, and feelings. I'm sure there is much deeper meaning in this than my simple mind can comprehend without going back and rereading and studying it.
