I'm not going to lie, it wasn't an easy story to ease into. I struggled to stay focused. However, once the main character started to explore his inner world more deeply and the strange occurrences happening to him started to grow stranger by the day, I was captivated. I had no trouble imagining every sentence as a scene from a movie. I could envision what each character looked like, what Tomohiko Amada's studio looked like, the pit, Menshiki's mansion, and the woods around our main character's temporary home. I do have to say that the whole part about metaphors and double metaphors was incredibly hard to follow and I was on the edge of losing my interest. As someone who paints and has a broad knowledge on art theory and history, I thoroughly enjoyed art being the red line running through the story.
If you're not sure if women have breasts, you should read this book. It'll clear things up for you.
okay this is more like a 3.75 but i’m rounding up because there were so many aspects to this book i really loved and enjoyed reading. i don’t know how to explain it fully but i felt very satisfied while reading this book for 85% of the time. i just don’t know why he’s so obsessed with boobs and any criticism of how murakami writes women is very apparent here in a few different ways. but i really did like the prose about painting and ~ideas~ and the line between reality and fantasy
For the first time, a book that I never wanted to end, a story that is a pure genius.🌟 Murakami never fails to amaze me. Through this magnificent adventure I fell in love again with this ingenious author.✨
I thought this one was pretty incredible, a very good homage to Gatsby and The Long-Goodbye

Murakami is one of my favourite authors, so I might be biased, but I really liked it. It's a bit slower than the other books I read by him, but I can always immerse myself in the atmospheres Muakami describes.
I love Murakami but writing parts in the perspective of a 13 year old girl were atrocious & I could do without the dream rape...
