I hate it, I like it, I hate it, I like it...

You have no idea, how much I was excited about this book. I love Murakami, but this was just disappointing. I can't believe that I forced myself to finish this. I'm gonna pretend that this never happened.

3,4 of 5 stars!

Finally 5th Books for DisneyReadathon 2019 is finally finished read! haha i'm really sorry guys for the late review (super duper lazy as af)

I can say this books is totally 'normal' fantasy for Haruki Murakami. So thats why i love it. I thought it is better than [b:The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle|11275|The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle|Haruki Murakami|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327872639l/11275._SY75_.jpg|2531376]! Eventhough both of them have similar vibes for [b:Alice's Adventures in Wonderland|6324090|Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, #1)|Lewis Carroll|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1391204048l/6324090._SX50_.jpg|55548884] retelling story in Murakami's way.

The storyline itself told about an young man who divorced with his wife, Yuzu and then he stayed in an old house in Odawara who owned by respectable artist, Tomohiko Amada. Who knows there is mystery lies when this young man decide to unwrapping one fascinating's painting from Tomohiko amada which called 'Killing Commendatore' . Some reader said this books is inspired from [b:The Great Gatsby|4671|The Great Gatsby|F. Scott Fitzgerald|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1490528560l/4671._SY75_.jpg|245494] by Scott Fitzgerald too. You can guess later what parts in this books which similar is? :p

If TWBC the entrance is from neighbour's well in this pieces the medium is based on Painting. so if you fans of alice in wonderlan i can say you will love the storyline is.. there is also a little bit romance in this pieces but it is lighter than [b:Norwegian Wood|11297|Norwegian Wood|Haruki Murakami|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386924361l/11297._SY75_.jpg|2956680] and not as weird as [b:1Q84|10357575|1Q84|Haruki Murakami|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1483103331l/10357575._SX50_.jpg|18160093] too

After reading this pieces i can say ignorance is really a bliss and i doesn't need to be involve in

TW: SA/rape - Pointlessly long and misogynistic for no reason (even for murakami). One of the main topics left up in the air is whether or not the main character impregnates his wife through some kind of metaphysical rape. Nothing justifies these types of plots and beyond its problematic elements it is repetitive. Save yourself the time lmao

Not Murakami's finest work, but distinctly Murakami, for those of us who enjoy hearing his voice ringing through the pages. Not unlike the bell at the bottom of the pit. The best parts of the book relate to his descriptions of what it feels like to create art. I am no artist, but through Murakami's eyes, I could feel the canvas splashed with colours. How does it rank in Murakami's opus? For me, above 1Q84, and below Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

The female characters in this book are minimized to the size of their chest, including the 13 year old girl who is at the core of the storyline. The stereotypical way Murakami portrays women as shallow and mystical beings with the sole purpose of pleasing men is tired and outdated.

There are a few slightly redeeming qualities that kept me pushing through. The creative process is described in a unique and fascinating way that resonated and kept my attention. Philosophically, there are some excellent moments as well.

Sadly, I finished this book feeling empty. Haven’t we read enough books by men who objectify women and young girls? Do we really need to read about a man dreaming of raping his sleeping ex-wife?

As a long time Murakami fan, I’m sad to realize that his writing will have to stay in the past for me.

Look, I almost loved this but I just don't want to read these endless discussions about teenage girls' breasts, Murakami.

there has always been an innate comfort in Murakami's endless depiction of domestic activities, with the alternation of some inscrutably quaint events. those recurring elements from his earlier works being written in this book—the way he pours his subconscious over and over into his books is what makes his works so unique and special.
the end of underworld journey felt like being awakened from a bizarre lucid dream in a siesta, it felt riveting, yet short. but, overall, i was profoundly engrossed by the role of a painting as an allegorical medium in the story, which discloses many ways to interpret it; also, the portrayal of idea, metaphor, and its connectivity toward the unnamed protagonist's journey, both in the underworld and this realm.

How cathartic it was to get to spend a whole 688 pages in a world written into existence by Murakami. Sublime.

2.2

I'm just not sure this was worth how long it was. The ending felt incomplete, which seems impossible for a 700-page novel. I could pick apart all the elements that were missing a resolution or felt unnecessary, but I don't necessarily think it's worth the time to be spent on it.
