Mixed feelings about this novel. I'm not sure if this Murakami novel is particularly bad or I just don't enjoy his style anymore (probably both).
The story is interesting at times but the novel is too long and repetitive imo. Also Murakami's description of women is off-putting as always.

After reading Kafka on the Shore and not liking it, (it just didn't click with me) I was skeptical about getting into this book. This book ended up making me a fan of Haruki Murakami.
I don't know what about it was so magnetic for me, but I had a lot of fun reading it. There were some places where I was thinking, how does that even happen, but it all tied well in the end.
I can still picture my interpretation of the painting and it's been a while since I read it....
I think even though it was a book on the longer side I enjoyed every moment of it.

This is about when I had enough of Murakami's inability to write women and his strange fascination with teen girls.
Giving this a 2 is impossibly hard, because I'm a long time Murakami fan. There is this frustratingly dull quality that Murakami's newer works have taken on, that I keep hoping will dissipate and so far it hasn't. Killing Commendatore is incredibly verbose to the point that it could have easily have been half its size and achieved the same (if not a better) purpose. If you have read any of Murakami's works, then you can see all of his tropes and motifs in this one: weird sexual encounters of dubious consent, ties between middle-aged men and unrelated pre-teen/teen girls, ears (he restricted his ear fascination to one point this time), meticulously-detailed passages about meals, sleeping, clothing, and in this book, CARS, oh, and wells, can't ever have a Murakami book without a reference to some kind of well, tiny people who show up in dream states, dream states that aren't dream states, affairs, boring protagonists who are somehow surrounded by interesting people...you get it. The first half of this book was slow but interesting, almost bordering on suspenseful, and then slowly drudged towards a predictable and unsatisfying end. Honestly, if you want a Murakami novel, try anything preceding 1Q84. For almost 700 pages this simply wasn't worth the investment, no matter how much I wish it was.
