I have long enjoyed the Vera Stanhope series, and this entry did not disappoint. The north-east coast of England, troubled teens in care, a new member on Vera's team, a missing teen, town and rural settings, all play a part. The title refers to three standing stones on a hill that are connected to legends and an event, a bit like Halloween but different, that provides a high point in the mystery. I have marked this book as "retirement-aging" because Vera and one of the social workers are heading toward that age where one wonders if the work makes a difference. The author demonstrates a heart for troubled teens and those in difficult settings, and she makes a case for keeping any "homes" for them under local auspices rather than that of corporations. One of my other takeaways from this book is that I don't mind reading longer books if 1) I know the author's work, and 2) the chapters are not long.

Zipped through this one, which was engaging and also not as dark as some of her other ones. Very place-based description--made me want to go hiking!

I just couldn’t keep reading it. I didn’t at all think it was compelling, or worth finishing.
