All I want to know is: where did my effing Story go?!?

It starts with a story. Good story. Nice. Good writing.
Then we get the 'magically bonded' trope. Fine. There is some excellent Drarry and Sterek out there that use that trope. No problems with that trope. But then Story gets abandoned just so we can spend a whole lot of time in a room watching the magic bonding. It goes a little like this:

Brady: I am afraid of the black and I miss my family and in a few days we're all gonna die when Kai-Ren gets here and I'm not gay and get out of my head and stop touching me and I need to touch you or you're gonna die but we're all gonna die when Kai-Ren gets here and I wanna touch you but I don't wanna touch you and our dreams are all exact memories and I don't want them but they turn me on and touch me some more because we are all gonna die when Kai-Ren gets here anyway and I miss my family...
Then there is a little break where Brady gets out of the room, with or without Cam, and gets picked on by officers or other recruits or bad news, Cam flatlines, Brady comes running back, and there is crying.
So. Much. Crying. And fucking, of course.
Then go back to Brady's internal monologue and repeat a few more times.

And then Kai-Ren FINALLY arrives, and the story comes running back, waving and shouting: 'Here I am! I got lost! So Sorry! But I'm back now!" And then everything is alright for a bit.

Just in time to get a sloppy romance ending slapped on top. I am all for not tying everything up with a big bow, but this is like they kicked Story in the ass on the way out: Yeah, thanks for coming back, but we decided we don't need you after all. Instead, we're going to do a whole lot of quick handwaving and wahla: family reunion and apartment hunting back on Earth.

The fuck happened with the treaty? How do you get diagnosed as crazy but not get discharged? How..... how..... ?

Ugh! I want my Story back.

So how do you rate that? Awesome beginning, repetitive and emotionally manipulative middle, brief flare up of awesome and then a fudged ending. A three star minus, I guess.

It was quite a sweet romance with some darker elements than what I was expecting.

To start out, I DID like this book. It was well written and interesting.

That said, I was disappointed. When I bought it, at the place I bought it, it was billed as "SciFi/Space Opera" and yes, that is true, but this felt like it should've had an added 'erotica' tag. There's nothing WRONG with erotica, but I got really tired of all the sex scenes when I was expecting SCIENCE FICTION! If I wanted something that felt like at least 30% sex, I would've bought something with that in mind. I disliked the fact that there were so many gratuitous sex scenes but so little actual science fiction elements in action, not to mention the lack of real answers in the resolution. You don't LEARN anything.

I'd honestly give it more of a 3.5/5 than 3, but oh well. So yeah, it's good, but if you're looking for more of a plot-filled story than character-focused erotica, this probably isn't the one you want.

It was ok. A bit repetitive. The MMC was a bit whiny and immature.

Glorious, uncomfortable and absolutely enthralling to read.

Brady was exactly what I imagined a young man in the military would be. Not quite fully adult but on the cusp of maturity.

The real story wasn't so much the romance, though it did add a touch of softness to an otherwise dark story. The threat of the Faceless, Cameron's situation and Brady's home situation were all key plotlines that made this book work.

My only complaint is that Cam and Brady's ending was far too brief and rushed.

That was INTENSE! Wow... just... wow! I LOVE how this story GUTTED me again and again. And though I enjoyed the end, I’m not sure it felt right to me. I probably would have love-hated it if I’d be left gutted in the end, but that would have felt like the terrible, awful, painful, but right ending.

As far as the story goes, I feel like I should give Dark Space 3.75-4 stars. There were little things that I didn’t like and/or found somewhat problematic. And yet... the things that worked, worked so well! This story MOVED me. It gave me ALL the feels. Plus it was fresh and exciting, intense and riveting. So in spite of the things that rubbed me a bit wrong, I’m giving it an enthusiastic 5 fantastic stars.

I am obsessed. I loved this so so much. This has everything I love in a book. Sci fi that is at least somewhat believable, a perfectly balanced romance and plot with just the right speed of progression, deep emotions but not heavy enough where it’s depressing the entire time. Just, perfect for me. I’m so happy this is a series and I can’t wait to read what happens next.

Wish there was more MM sci-fi! I really enjoyed this, definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

(Quick side note: the only warning for this book on Audible seems to be the standard "Contains mature themes" - I would suggest anyone who has issues with stories containing sexual assault, violence in general, or homophobia, to proceed with caution.)

Great read and a great listen.

Interesting story that worked really well being told from the main character's perspective.

Looking forward to the next one.
