Dark Space

I liked the characters, and I felt like the book overall had a good amount of tension. It never really got slow enought to be boring, but it wasn't too much either.
The story itself wasn't THAT exciting to me; but I liked how it was written, the thoughts, problems and
Spoilertrauma
of the main character.
And I'm a sucker for the tropes -
Spoilerforced proximity, shared bed, shared thoughts (the last one might not be a "real" trope, but I like it a lot!).

Dark Space is an interesting tale of an accident that draws two disparate people together physically, mentally, and emotionally. Brady Garrett is a character with a clear voice and persona who struggles with his new duty to be a psychic pacemaker for the fallen war-hero Cameron Rushton (who feels physically sound in Henry's storytelling in her description of him, but doesn't have the same depth as Brady).

While the overall tale was enjoyable and provided an interesting spin on romance, the world itself feels lacking as there are a lot of questions I had as a reader. How did humanity discover the Faceless? What sparked this war between the two? How have we changed so much that no one bats an eye at a militaristic society (with huge class discrepancies) where women are "too valuable" to be involved in the war effort?

The actual story itself also felt a little lacking in that Henry built this gritty, testosterone-saturated space station...a place with such potential for character development and exploration...and we never strayed from the three major locations where the story took place. The number of distinguished characters also felt a little lacking as the only people we truly get to know from the named cast are Brady, Cameron, and Doc.
SpoilerWade is little more than a sadistic rapist who doesn't add much to Brady's character or to the conflict at all. Chris is built up to be a point of jealousy for Brady, but appears for a chapter and disappears just as quickly. The Faceless themselves also feel like the aliens from the movie Signs; we spend all this time fearing them and once they appear, the drama and terror of the approaching beetle-men fades away in a matter of paragraphs.

I enjoyed reading Dark Space and while there were some parts where Henry excelled (i.e., Brady's roundness and the bits of setting we did see), I feel like it didn't reach its full potential. I can only hope that the second book in this series will allow us to experience the rich world the author has built a little more.

This was a pleasant surprise, sci fi, futuristic world but still incredibly relatable when it comes to human behavior and interactions. This "new world" is built into the story line in a subtle way. You discover it through their interactions. I really liked that, sometime science fiction novels go into so much detail to describe the setting that you lose touch with the characters and the actual story. Lisa Henry doesn't do that, the setting descriptions are minimal but effective in creating the world around the main characters.

Now Cam and Brady, the MC's, they're interesting, their discovery of each other is sweet and messed up all at once. This is just the beginning for them... at least I think so I have yet to read the summary of Dark Space#2 but it seems like this is unfinished story, just the beginning really. I barely scratched the surface of their romance but Lisa Henry has built strong, fleshed out characters that I am eager to learn more about and can't wait for their HEA.

I can't end this without mentioning the writing itself... Lisa Henry has skills. MM Romances with great writing are rare, it's a pleasure to read one so well written.

4⭐️

That was a nice surprise !
I saw this cover a few times these past few years, it looked intriguing to me but I never dare try to read it. Sci-fi, aliens, etc. it's really not my cup of tea.

But I'll admit this book is really good, it kept me interested the whole time and now, I want to know more about the faceless !

Damn, this shit still slaps.

I am what we can safely call a lowish-level science fiction fan. I have read some sci fi, but it’s not my main gig--and this means that some apparently accepted sci fi tropes will trip me up.

Him: what’d ya think?

Me: It was good. Dark and claustrophobic and stressful.

Him: blah, blah, literary commentary, blah, sci fi geekitude, etc.

Me: I had the same quibble with this that I had with that shitty space lobster book, tho. This is how far into the future? And blatant homophobia is that…blatant?

Him: That’s what I said.

Me: Also, who smokes on a space ship?

Him: They probably have air scrubbers.

Me: I know. But come on!

Him: It’s a staple of far-future sci fi…blah, blah, human frailty, facilitating empathy, blah, blah.

Me: That’s stupid.

Him: I’m always bothered by artificial gravity, though… blah, blah, technology, blah.

Me: So, yeah, it was pretty good.

This book...this book....IS AMAZING. *swoons a little* I love sci fi but sadly it's a rare sub genre in MM fiction. This is my first book by Lisa Henry and I will now promptly go out and get all the rest of her stuff. Originality and creativity this lady has got it! What I loved most was the shared mind factor that both main guys always knew what the other was thinking (yeesh how invasive), at first I thought I would hate it but no NO Henry does what so few authors ever atempt, and that is making a book where romantic MC's CAN'T have a stupid misunderstanding, gosh i loved it! And the faceless? please please pleaseeeeee write more about these kinky bastads.

WOW

This completely blew me away. I can't wait to devour the next two! This book has it all! I laughed, I cried, I was turned on and grossed out!
