Jag är överväldigad och vet inte hur jag ska formulera mig.
Fuktiga myrar.
Mörka skogar.
Fallfärdiga kåkar.
Smutsiga, trasiga människor.
Gör varandra illa trots blodsband. På grund av blodsband.
Hundar som vakar och skäller.
Kaffepannan går varm.
Spriten går in och vettet ut.

Intriguing whodunnit - well constructed but ultimately a bit too ‘happy ever after’.

Vidar is a grubby, unfriendly old man with an unnerving amount of control over his adult daughter. Liv, Vidar's daughter is a mysterious woman, she has no friends, extreme anxiety living with her father and any relationships are promiscuous and secretive.
I loved the way the writer interlinked multiple storylines and they have a way of writing the characters in such a way that makes me hate the antagonists and root for Liv and her son.
I would love to see a sequel to this book as I need to know what happens next!

This was a great story that was well translated. I enjoyed it but it didn’t blow me away as I thought it would. There are some good twists in the story and it kept me guessing and I changed my mind a couple of times too. Very descriptive and enjoyable but I found the timelines a bit confusing in places, needed to be a bit clearer. The characters developed well and I found myself liking Liam more as the book went on but the main character, Liv, less. She was quite soft considering what she had been through and was definitely not developed as she could have been. The countryside they lived in sounded amazing, you were given good descriptions of the surrounding area and could see yourself living there.
Overall a good storyline but lacking in places, well worth picking up though purely for the descriptions within. I’ll be sure to look out for more by the same author to see how she’s evolves.

From the first few pages we are introduced to Liv Björnlund, a filling station attendant. She lives with her teenage son Simon and her father Vidar in Ödesmark. They live in a rundown hilltop house built by Vidar years ago. 3 generations of the same family living under the same roof and knowing each other’s every move.

To say that they are a bit of an odd family would be an understatement and this doesn’t go unnoticed by the locals from the town. Vidar is not well liked and considered a hoarder of wealth. Despite being perceived as wealthy he makes his family live like they are on the poverty line. The family are gossiped about and subject to many rumours. When a decision is taken by one local not only does it have repercussions for the Björnlund but the locals and everyone that surround them

It was hard not to feel sorry for Liv who is living under Vidar’s thumb. She longs to leave the house and escape Vidar’s controlling behaviour but just can’t seem to take that first step. She is a grown woman who has no freedom and her every movement is policed by her father. Essentially she lives a claustrophobic life and this comes across clearly in the story and the writing.

The book flits between past and present. In the present we have Liv and her family and in the past we are told another story of unnamed characters. Initially I didn’t know how the story ad characters fitted together but by the end it became clear how all the characters were connected and why.

I am always intrigued by books written in another language that have been translated. I enjoyed this book so much that I wish I could also read it in its original Swedish form.

This was a tense, atmospheric and gripping read which had me guessing from the very beginning as to how the story would pan out, with an ending that shocked me that I wasn’t expecting.

I received a gifted copy for an honest review.

For so long I have shunned Swedish noir (after overdosing, I guess) but I really enjoy Jackson's books, and I really really enjoy the woman (Marie Richardson) who reads the audiobook (she also reads Fredrik Backman's books, she's so good!).
