What a crazy ride. Who could have foreseen such a wild story about a corporate headhunter? The first 30-40 pages were all set up. And I was certain I had chosen another book where I was going to hate everyone. And I was right, I did. These people are awful. Yet in this instance it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story.

This is a true thriller. To nearly the last page there is a twist to every turn. I became audible reading this book (WTF!, NO, Wait...What?). I even laughed at several moments (though I’m not certain it was appropriate or desired). I don’t want to give details because I may give away some spoilers and this story needs its drama.

I will say that one drawback was the translation. I don’t know specifically what was wrong but there was definitely something...off. At points it became distracting and I had to reread some passages. If the story had not been so enthralling I might have given it a lower rating.

If you are looking for a quick and crazy read pick this up.

I liked this book. But not with a capital L, for sure.
Guilty pleasure read, but it would have been more pleasurable and just plain better if even ONE of the characters were a regular human being rather than all cold-blooded sociopaths.

Great book. Jo Nesbo is a very good author. Keeps you guessing

If you go into this book expecting it to be like a Harry Hole novel, you will be disappointed.

However, if you go into it expecting a clever, hilarious and disturbing take on the typical thriller, you will love it.

I am so tired of books in which female characters exist only so male characters can be casually violent towards them.

This book, which was chosen the 2008 Norwegian Best Novel of the Year, is a standalone thriller, not part of the Harry Hole series.

Roger Brown seems to have it all. He has a good career: he is a headhunter who is very successful at selecting the right candidates for top corporate positions. He is married to Diana, a beautiful, accomplished woman. All is not as it seems, however. Brown has insecurities (his height) and is morally dubious; he dabbles in art theft as a sideline. He wonders why his wife is "incapable of seeing my contemptibility, my treacherous nature, my weakness when I encountered adversity, my mindless wickedness when I encountered mindless wickedness" (22).

Because of financial straits, Brown burgles Clas Greve, a candidate he is considering for a prestigious job, but things go seriously wrong and he finds himself in the sights of another type of headhunter. A thrilling cat and mouse game ensues.

The book is an entertaining read. Roger is a fully developed character. The dialogue is quick and witty with touches of black humour. The fast-paced plot is complex with many twists and turns, but if the reader pays close attention, he/she can work things out since Nesbo does not cheat. Be forewarned: there are some gruesome scenes.
