Years ago in a summer filled Lincoln Park I started reading The Art of Happiness. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get into it.
This time I was met with the same resistance. I was glad I pushed through, unveiling some sacred reminders about loving kindness and meditation.
Sacred listening stuck out most to me. I think of this now as I start to build my business, how healing and how important sacred listening is.
At one point, Dr. Cutler is discussing some really unsolvable issues of deep trauma. The Dalai Lama spoke of just listening presently may be all that you do. Emphasizing the importance of listening to your own thoughts and responses, but not owning any of it. This may sound detached to Midwestern readers, but it flipped the coin on my thoughts.
In many perspectives, listening without judgement or reaction, may be the most effective tool we can use in any facet of life.
Superb! I recommended The Art of Happiness to EVERYONE! This book needs be reread at least once a year!
The book is very well written and full of priceless knowledge based on buddhist teachings but applicable to any religious or nonreligious persons.
Filled with Dalai Lama's answers to the most pressing questions of human existence and practical meditations and visualizations but also filled with space for individuality in spiritual practices and beliefs.
I was expecting however a greater focus on attachment and how it's a source of suffering and additionally, personally I find the negative attitude towards 'negative' emotions a little disappointing and I was looking forward to some elaboration on how to let them go instead of surpressing them.
The book was different than I expected but nonetheless pleasant and very insigtful.

I feel this book should be more suitable for those that want to know more about themselves. Philosophical books act like a shortcut for people with hectic lives that don’t have a quiet time for self-reflection.
There were a number of assumptions have been made based on the author’s views about the Dalai Lama. In my own opinion, I feel the author seems didn't understand the teachings and the time spent for all the conversations was just purely for this book.
I feel the author is not prepared to open himself to accept something that is different from his world. He seems still very stuck to what he believes to be right and his own ways of thinking. Well, there’s nothing wrong about having your own beliefs but at least don’t give us the impression that you’re still stuck with your own ways and be more neutral when you express your thoughts in this book.

I bought this book used in Kathmandu in 2003 and I really loved it... just went back to Nepal for the first time right as I'm feeling a bit of a spiritual crisis so re-purchased. Let's see if it helps!

This book is set up as an interview which was not what I was expecting. The topics brought up definitely make the reader question their own thoughts and ideas about general life questions. The authors writing was accessible and the topics kept my interest.
Lovely book ! A scientific interpretation and validation of spiritual practices followed by the Dalai Lama. Solid read ! :)
I think this is a book to be read slowly, and preferably to own, as it did not lend itself well to library due dates. Each section has something worth considering, and so I think the ideal way to read it is in short spurts, to allow yourself enough time to reflect, consider, analyze, or practice the thoughts and ideas put forth.
I would love to own this book because I foresee myself coming back to it again and again.
