I know many think of this as a book parallel to The Princess and the Hound, even the author herself, so I read this one without reading the first. It was confusing at first, but after figuring out the basic premise of the first one I really started to enjoy this one. I loved the beginning chapters and the author's way of writing their senses and thoughts as animals and later as humans. Some part of the story felt like something was missing though, so I give it 4 stars instead of 5. The book was very enjoyable overall and hard to put down for sure. It almost reminded me of brother bear but with more realistic animals, haha.

I have owned this book for several years at least and I'm trying to read more from my bookshelves this year. I enjoyed the tone of the writing and got attached to the characters. Now I have to decide whether to hunt down the others in the series at the library, since I don't own any of them.

Awesome. I love Mette Ivie Harrison's writing, and this was brilliant, as usual.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt the story and plot line were very solid. I could relate to the characters and was drawn into the story. And I thought it was a beautiful story. And I found their mixture of human and animal intriguing and their struggle between their two sides fascinating. I liked seeing how they helped each other become better and how they both grew throughout the novel.

Each chapter alternated between the bear and the hound’s points of view. For the most part I liked this, but sometimes I would want to see an event though the other’s eyes. Also, sometimes the story would jump forward in time before I felt ready for that to happen, though I think this ties back to wanting to see an event through the other point of view or at least get the other’s take on what had happened. I do realize, however, that doing so would have made the book much longer.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. And I thought it a great follow-up to The Princess and the Hound.

Rating: 4.5 stars – Highly Recommend
Content: A little violence, female dog referred to by word that is also a swear word

Harrison has a very unique story telling ability. One of the things I love about reading so much is being exposed to different writing styles. Harrison has one of the most lyrical and beautiful writing style. The writing itself feels like a fairy tale. Which makes absolutely no sense at all, but I just can't think of how else to describe it. The writing alone is enough to lull you into the story, regardless of what it's actually about.

This is more of a companion novel to The Princess and the Hound, you wouldn't have to necessarily read The Princess and the Hound, but I would recommend it to better understand some of the aspects in the novel. I do prefer the first novel, but I still really enjoyed reading this story.

I didn't quite connect with the characters this time around, this is the type of story where you feel like you are standing on the outside watching the characters instead of experiencing the story with them. Personally, I like experiencing the story with them.

I don't think this is a book for everyone. If you enjoy fairy-tale retellings, real fairy tales, not the disney-esque fairy tale, I think you'll enjoy this one.

Overall, it's an endearing story that's beautifully written.

The story was good. I liked the characters and the understanding they have for each other. For some reason it took me longer to read than I think it should have. I will probably read her other books, but I'm not in any hurry.

Fair but not brilliant. I liked the first one better.
