Overall I enjoyed this book. The depth of characters of the core Hat Creek outfit (Call, Gus, Deets, Newt) was so intricate and well done. I never expected to care this much about a group of cowboys. That being said, I thought the other characters, especially the women, really lacked depth which was jarring in comparison. I almost DNF due to some of the violence against women where the descriptions just kept going on and on. Glad I read it, not sure I’d recommend it to others.

The story was so detailed and I couldn’t put it down. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the use of racial slurs, etc. I get it’s a western set in the early 19th century but it’s icky.

I’m not sure I’d have ever picked up an 800 page western if it wasn’t recommended to me but oh my god am I glad I did (THANK YOU Katie!!!!!!)
I’ve read many great books this year but this is one I’ve stayed up late for (‘one more chapter’ is never just one more) multiple times in the past two weeks. That’s big praise coming from me and my strict bedtime…..
The characterisation here is absolutely wonderful. Plot-wise, not much really happens in the couple of hundred pages that make up Part I and yet I found myself totally invested from the first few pages because the characters are so well written. And then, when the pacing picks up in Part II I just couldn’t put it down!! I felt like I was in the cattle drive (the amount of times I laughed out loud at Gus’ jokes as if I was there is scary) and I cared so much for the Hat Creek outfit I was CONSTANTLY on the edge of my seat. It’s so vivid I felt as if I was being burnt by the midday sun on the plains and looking over my shoulder for Indians and horse thieves. The level of detail in the writing makes for great pay-off when things that were mentioned in passing in the opening pages are called back to in the final chapters. Also special shout out to there also being complex, strong and flawed women in here I love you all. Masterful stuff!
I powered through the last 200ish pages in one evening, cried my tired little heart out and now I am in mourning of this brilliant book. Lonesome Dove come home. I miss you.
