The pacing of this book was strange but I think I liked it. Some parts were very quick, like the battles and intense scenes. Some scenes took chapters. I think I liked this though, I don’t feel like I wished anything had gone longer.

I was not expecting to like this book. Not at all. But it was very good.

I accidentally put off this review for much too long, so excuse me for how brief it is.

I went into this book unsure if I would like it because my friends on Goodreads have mixed reviews. The beginning had me on edge and there were a few things I wasn't sure I liked, but in the end I ended up liking it enough that I will probably read the sequel.

Romance Spoilers in this paragraphNow, I know a few people have a problem with the romance and the teacher-student feel, I get that, but I feel everything was fine since nothing happened until they were no longer student and teacher. That being said, I also thought they were really cute and loved how Cartier always let her make the first moves, which allowed them to stay on equal footing. I will say it is slightly weird since he has known her since she was 10 and her teacher since she was.... 13 or 14. In the end though, especially since romance isn't a huge part of the book, it didn't bother me as much.

Okay, no more spoilers.

Now, the passions thing I thought was a bit strange, perhaps I just didn't get it. It is one part of the book I thought was a bit silly.

Brienna, I really liked. She's a strong character, shown not because of her fighting ability, but she way with knowledge, adapting, and sticking with her beliefs. Even her adopted family is pretty awesome and you can feel the connection. Which is another thing to mention -- I love when books that talk about family, don't mean bloodlines exclusively. I groan every time I read those, drives me crazy.

Anyhow I ended up really liking this book and love how it felt like a standalone-- YES! I'm kinda getting tired of fantasy series. I have so many series going on right now, that standalones are appreciated.
I will recommend this to people in the future, and I look forward to the next book which I hope is the Queen's POV or one of Brienna's passion sisters.

I have loved every single Rebeca Ross book I've read, and this was no exception.

The characters were so interesting and the romance was so quiet yet strong, I ate it up.
I did have a bit of an issue with the age difference. Am I wrong in counting at least 7 or 8 years between them? and they met when she was ten? hm...

The story was really interesting, and the ending felt pretty closed, so this could be read as a standalone, though I know it's a trilogy. Based in the end I am really curious as to what happens in the sequel, given the synopsis kinda makes it sound like a epilogue turned into an entire book.
