Oi oi...

This book practically came out of nowhere and without expecting it, it instantly became a favorite of mine. I remember reading reviews months ago that said that the book wasn’t what they expected, but I still thought this would be reminiscent of stories like The Marsh King’s Daughter where a girl is held captive by her evil family… Well, this book wasn’t like that, at all. It was much more tragic and intimate that I thought it would be.

I don’t want to give anything away, but Resin was such a special story and one that I would recommend to anyone who wants to read something quite different from your typical “dysfunctional family book”. Resin was like a dark fairytale and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for all the characters in the novel. Even when you know they’re not doing the right thing. Even when they commit unspeakable acts of cruelty.

The novel structure was not easy to follow at first (diary entries, present time narration, flashbacks of family members, Liv’s flashbacks, different points of view…), but somehow I didn’t mind because the writing was so easy to follow and so beautiful at the same time. I became immediately captivated by this dark and sad, and emotional tale about family, isolation, love, and broken childhood.

And I know I won’t ever forget about Liv easily. She’s a character that stays with you. Her voice is striking and she’s simply precious.

P.S. Tästä tulee vähän American Horror Story vibbisar. Eli aika täydellinen syksy/halloween kirja.

This book surprised me in so many ways. I had no clue what it was about and I expected a thriller because that's what people told me it was. However, this is NOT a thriller. It's a psychological horror, in my opinion, and it was unlike anything I've ever read. The Haarder family is wild and it was so fun and disturbing reading about them and seeing them slowly descent into madness. The writing and the atmosphere were absolutely fantastic and I could feel how awful their house was, all the smells and the mess. This book is not for everyone and it might make you sick if you don't have a stomach for the ugly but it blew me away and exceeded all my expectations.

An excellent book - and one that at times I wished I hadn’t read. It is deeply disturbing, not because the characters and their actions are extreme and descend into insanity, but because the seeds of their motivations are familiar. Hauntingly beautiful at the same time. It takes a while to shake this book off.

Dark, darker, darkest. Through the eyes of a six-year-old. Partly anyway. It makes the horror easier to digest, but, surprisingly, not less effective. On the contrary. The teddy bear thing for instance. Little Liv has noticed that it tears up sometimes. White, snow-like stuff comes out, so she has to sew it back together. Then she compares it to her overweight, bedridden mom, who has also started to leak.. Liv's naivety versus morbid reality; an all-consuming read.
