Sarina delivered more than what I was expecting. She nailed the grump hockey player, the smart and independent woman, and a whole company read to take down whoever is terrorizing said woman. It was hot, it had action-packed scenes, it was fun, giggly, swoon-worthy, it got my adrenaline going and my heart racing!
It's the most successful company you've never heard of.
Alex, a childhood friend of Eric's, needs protection, and who better to be the bodyguard and fit the boyfriend role than Eric Bayer. He does not want this at all, but he doesn't have much of a choice. Off they go to Hawaii where there's only one bed in their room to share and tensions are running high!
"She definitely notices when my flag is hoisted. I mean, it's hard to hide this kickstand when the bike is in gear."
Eric was ever the gentleman with Alex. He treated her like a queen. All the food he gave her, like yes! Food is the way to my heart! The attention, the care, the admiration he had for her was palpable and shining through every page.
No man has ever overwhelmed me like Hurricane Eric. That was a Category 5 experience.
Alex is the independent woman I was looking forward to reading. She's strong, knows what she wants, has worked hard to become the CEO of a company, knows the technology world like she knows how to breathe. She stands up for herself and leaves men jaw-slacked in her wake. She's full of the snark that I was here for!
"Alexandra," the twit says as he approaches. "Long time no see."
"That was intentional," she says, taking a sip of her drink.
The chemistry is absolutely there. And the maturity these characters exerted was refreshing. My problem with this novel was that I was expecting suspense, which was there, but not enough. And we were kind of left hanging in the resolve of the story. I'm seriously hoping the author continues this part of the story in another book because we can't be left like this.
Overall, Moonlighter was a beautiful and fun start to the spin-off of the spin-off. You see characters from the other series, which I thought was great. I can't wait to read more from this series! I need a book for Max and Scout! I felt something there and I'm not letting it go!

this book was pretty good. i enjoyed the slow build up of alex and eric’s relationship over like four months. it wasn’t instalove. and i enjoyed the espionage aspect of the book as well. i enjoyed being introduced to new characters and i liked reading about eric’s slow development to retirement.
however, this book seemed really all over the place. i wasn’t sure what was happening half of the time and time felt really weird. it felt like everything happened in like a week but the next chapter would be like “two months til new year” when the previous chapters were in like june or something. even when rosie was bored, i was like wtf. how did we get here? so i guess im saying this book felt extremely nonlinear and i was confused repeatedly.
also, the whole hacking situation felt like it was never resolved. like what happened to xian smith? someone was shot man. idk what is happening. but i am still excited to read more.
also, no epilogue which sucks and i hate everything.

This was such a delight! Eric is so grumpy and not good at communicating and really struggling with the nearing end of his professional hockey career - when his childhood friend needs a fake boyfriend cum bodyguard - oh and she is pregnant. Alex is having a strange year - creepy exes, possible corporate espionage, old friends she doesn't recognize and not to mention a due date with a tiny human.
It was refreshing to read a book about people in their thirties finding love! Eric is grumpy but kindhearted and Alex is used to being on her own and really wouldn't mind some help sometimes and they are both super relatable. Definitely super interested in Scout, Duff, Gunnar, and the rest of the Company's cast of characters!
Tropes: fake dating; bodyguard; childhood friends to lovers; no strings attached sex; accidental pregnancy (for the heroine)

This was an intriguing book. I liked the mix of mystery and sport, even if I wished there was a bit more sport, but that’s a personal preference.
I loved Alex and Eric’s story. They’re great characters, typically Sarina, and always great.
I also liked the intrigue and the supporting cast of characters, I’m interested to see where the rest of this series goes, especially as it’s a little obvious the storyline here will continue.
An interesting read, give it a go!

Look. This book is, in many ways, a paradigm of Bowen's work. And that's both a good and a bad thing. The hero is a loveable grump, the heroine is shiny and successful, the mystery plot is intriguing, and the fun thing about Bowen is that the tropes are never quite what you expect; I never thought I'd be able to read a book with a pregnant heroine where the baby is not the hero's and the pregnancy isn't so much a plot-point as it is a simple fact that doesn't remotely get in the way of the romance. So props for that.
But over the years I've started to find that her characters are a little bit samey. Worse than that, it all feels a little bit shallow--all the characters have huge amounts of money and we're supposed to just accept that they're great people who have never benefitted from anything untoward? And that they're all extraordinarily talented and there was absolutely no nepotism involved in anything at all? I know this is high-fantasy romance here, but it's jarring. Especially when the heroine gets up to give a speech about problems in technology which neither inspires nor addresses the main ethical ramifications of a digital world. Am I expecting too much from a romance? Maybe, but this is a women who's supposed to be a brilliant CEO ready to take the world by storm.
And where things get really sticky? There's only one person of colour in the whole book. One. He's 'East Asian, at least by heritage', he works in cyber, and guess what? He's the villain. Yikes.

This book surprised me in THE BEST way! I was not expecting such a smart, witty and refreshing romance novel. Moonlighter is the story between Alex and Eric. Alex and Eric spent a whole summer together when they were just kids and had the best time. They haven't seen each other for twenty-one years and suddenly they're thrust into each others lives and on a trip to Hawaii together. I love a fake relationship trope and Sarina Bowen nails it with this book!
My favorite heroines are those that are competent, have a strong back bone and don't take crap from anyone. Alex is all of those things and then some. I loved it that she was the CEO and one of the best CEO's in the country. The amazing details regarding the tech world that Bowen puts in this book make it seem so real. There were times that I just had to stop reading to think about what was going on and then think "wow, this could definitely be happening in our world today."
I love love love a grumpy hero and Eric is THE definition of a grumpy hero. His gruff and grumbly attitude about almost everything was just so funny. Oh yeah, did I mention he's also a hockey player (swoooon). He wasn't immediately smitten and agreed to everything that Alex wanted and I loved that. Because that's how real relationships are - we tell each other when something sounds good and also when it doesn't. But most of all I really did love how much Eric cared for Alex. He was always looking out for her best interest, even if that meant his heart was on the line.
What a wonderful wonderful book. I can not wait for Max's story - hopefully with Scout?!

5/5 Stars
Ever since Sarina Bowen introduced readers to Eric Bayer, hotshot hockey player for the Brooklyn Bruisers, I've been dying to delve into his story. Now that the first book in The Company spin-off series is nearly out and I've had a chance to read Moonlighter I can assure all those fans that it's well worth the wait. Prepare for familiar faces, family dynamics, and one hell of a ride.
Right from the start, the reader takes a deep dive into Eric's background. His father and brother own a prestigious security company and they want him on board. What sucks him in though is an old childhood friend in deep shit. Alex is the CEO of a booming tech company, pregnant, and fears for her safety. He agrees to accompany her to Hawaii and play fake boyfriend for a bit. What's the worse that could happen?
It's clear early on these two have exquisite chemistry and they quickly take the plunge. It's what happens after that's so compelling and endearing. Eric would do anything for her despite his bachelor lifestyle and Alex struggles to let him get too close. The two of them have excellent banter but also a smile inducing goodwill that shows the depth of their feeling.
What takes this book to the next level though is the added element of mystery and threats occurring. Alex's safety is at risk from the start but it quickly turns from violent ex-boyfriend to high tech spy craft in a matter of pages. There are murky powers at work and everything from breaking and entering, chase scenes, and eliminating the competition comes up. Honestly it was a cool change of pace in my romance reading.
Overall Moonlighter was another excellent story from Sarina Bowen and I could not put it down. This offshoot from her Brooklyn Bruisers boys takes on an air of mystery and intrigue while still delivering the hot and heavy romance I've come to adore. Eric is quite the bad ass with a heart of gold and Alex pulls no punches in both business and life. I absolutely loved this one and totally r
ecommend anything Bowen writes!
