As I find myself tending to focus more on the hockey players in this series, as they all interact with each other in the other books, it took me a few minutes to realize that Alex is actually the business friend of billionaire and team owner of the Brooklyn Bruisers, Nate.
In this case, hockey player, Eric Bayer, is on break from the season and his family calls him in to work for their security firm to help out a family friend with a troublesome ex-boyfriend and baby daddy as well as possible corporate espionage.
I don't usually care to read pregnancy/baby included romances but being as I really have been enjoying Sarina Bowen's hockey series, I really didn't want to miss out on Eric's book. To my surprise I really enjoyed it.

It took me a couple of chapters to warm up to the writing style and the characters, but once the story was set up and well on its way, I was truly sucked in! I was not expecting the action packed story to overtake the romantic one, but it was a great balance and just what I needed to shake up my December reading!

I really liked this book, like all the other ones connected to the Brooklyn Bruisers.
It was really interesting to see Alex in another light and with way more context than we've seen her before and I liked her a lot.
Her dynamic with Eric was some reeeal good stuff, the banter between him and his brother Max as well.
The only thing I don't really like about these books is that they're not chronological.
I know it's because they can be read as stand alone's as well, but to me it just a bit confusing.
After reading Superfan, I was surprised to read that Nate and Rebecca are still only engaged and that Heidi and Castro aren't together yet. I had to piece it together a little.
I was a bit confused that this books takes place a few months after the black tie event that Alex held for the Bruisers after losing the bet to Nate.
So... I loooooooved it, but the non-chronological part is a bit unusual for me and it makes me need more time to get into the book.

Just the kind of fun I need to break up the time I spend crying over my thesis

Enjoyed the first half of the book way more than the latter. The beginning was fun and exciting but after a point, it fell quite flat began to drag on so much that I had to skim quite a bit. There was a lot happening in the book and the romance wasn't enough for me. Even when the romance was there, it wasn't exciting or something I was looking too forward too. Just a bit meh, cute. Maybe I didn't connect with the characters individually so I wasn't as invested in them together either. I just wasn't given enough incentive to root too much for them. There also wasn't as much character growth as I like to see in my books. There were definitely scenes in the book, more in the first half and then towards the very end that were fun but when it all came together it didn't quite work out for me. Overall, I was left quite underwhelmed.
I am very invested in Max and Scout, though. Scout was one of my very favorite aspects of this book and I'm sad we didn't see more of her!
Tropes this book has:
Some level of bodyguard romance
One MC taking care of the other when the other is sick/pregnant
Friends to lovers

Super sweet super cute friends to lovers romance. Really enjoyed both MCs very much! Alex was a hard working heroine that didn’t give anything up in the story and I really appreciated that.
I’m fast becoming a real lover of Sarina Bowen’s writing and storytelling. Looking forward to more.

I am so incredibly shocked by how much I was into this book. It's a pregnancy romance, which is soooo not my thing, but Eric and Alex are so freaking cute together that I can't even be mad. Also, if you're going to do a romance where the heroine is pregnant with someone else's baby, this is totally the way I'm gonna like it. The baby is such a non-issue. Alex is totally confident in her choice; Eric is at no point bothered by that at all. There's no shame, no judgment, and they're both on board. Even the way they doubt each other and fail to communicate at times is somehow also super cute???
The plot's the weak part of this book, because tbh it didn't actually feel resolved? Like, theycaught her assistant who was working with Xian , but I don't see how that resolves the larger problem? I mean, maybe it could but after that the whole thing is just dropped, which no. Also, I really dislike that the villain is, so far as I could tell, the sole non-white person in this book.
But if you can get past those plot issues, which, honestly, I don't read romance for plot so it was mostly a minor annoyance, this is REALLY good. And I know it's REALLY good because I (ME!) loved a ship in a pregnancy romance!
