2.5 stars. The ending was underwhelming, and i was not shocked one bit. It also didnt make sense? >>>>>
It was noted at the start of the book that the inside of the house had no evidence of the killer ie mud from the garden. So how did Guy Howard kill Luke, and get inside to bed? Same as Amelie and Maura, as A went outside and had blood on her, so she went back inside to the washing machine. M saw the body when going to her room and called 999 but she went back inside too. So all 3 kids went outside into the pouring rain, then inside with i assume muddy feet or wet clothes that must of dripped? Pot hole 1. Pot hole 2 is i dont believe a 10 year old could have made death provoking hits with a baseball bat? How strong is this child.
Also, i felt like i was out of the loop with most of the plot twists. I should have written a list of the characters so i didnt forget who was who, but i just didnt have any context or recollection of some of the ‘reveals’ that happened.
The identity theft was disappointing and didnt really go anywhere. The mystery pregnancy + child was a bit pointless.

Murder In The Family was such an intriguing and captivating cold case mystery. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the format and was hoping Cara Hunter had more stories like this, I think it could be a format to continue maybe in a series with the same experts to different “cold cases”. The second half felt more like a reality tv show which was kind of the point, but I could have gone without. Now that ending I called half-heartedly in the very beginning and I was so shocked to be right because it seemed so wild to think about. Also that ending! Rebecca, Jonah’s sister, definitely killed Guy and stole his watch as a token of sorts to avenge her brother even though he was a con artist. This was definitely an enjoyable read and kept me from going into a reading slump after reading Sunrise on the Reaping.

Ok so by the end of the book I was mostly just confused, irritated, and couldn’t care less about the murder. I was initially super excited to read this cos of the mixed media format and loved the first third of the book cos it was twisty with great pacing!
And then it got tiring. The format ended up feeling repetitive and a lot of dialogue redundant. There were WAY TOO MANY red herrings and incredulous connections just to throw you off it ended up being such overkill that by the end of the novel, I’m mostly just exhausted. Instead of feeling like I’m watching an amazing Netflix documentary it just read super amateurish and kinda flat. Bummer that this didn’t work out for me!

OMG!! I actually guessed the murderer from the beginning of the book. This is a first and I’m so shocked.
If you like thrillers and/or crime shows/podcasts, def check this one out!

4.5/5 Not quite a 5 star but close enough!
The format was so unique and engrossing. The first big reveal made me literally gasp and the next few were almost as surprising. I’ll admit that I kind of assumed from the beginning the killer would be who it was but I never once was right about HOW we would get there. So enjoyable.
