I admire Dolly Parton for her music, her strong faith, her kindness and how she acts to help others. This book was like having a conversation with her.

Wow I adore Dolly. I knew it before, but hearing her in this sure did make that more concrete. I would read any book about her I think. What a sweetpea

I listened each morning over my cup of ambition, a delightful, inspiring way to start the day. Like getting a daily pep talk from Dolly herself. Audiobook is the only way to go.

More like an extended podcast than a book; a reminder of how long Dolly has been performing and poignant to hear just as Carl died. Also a bit startling to hear her hint at possible affairs over the years (“I’ll let that song speak for itself.”) Also a call back to a regional identity and history that was still prominent in the 1970s but has been diminished with time.

It defies logic how Dolly Parton’s fan base crosses so many demographic circles. As you journey through this memoir that mystery starts to fade. Her transparency, humility, and broadly inclusive perspective make this such an engaging memoir. Her titanic success in so many endeavors defies her small town roots and first impressions. She even confronts the overt sexual characterization of her in the media and how she sees herself in relation to that. This reflective and optimistic outlook on life is likely a key to her lasting power. She understands the collective pulse of what drives all of us which helps keep her current and so broadly accepted. This is one retrospective that should be experienced in audiobook format. You get a fully immersive experience by listening to her classics and lesser known recordings, while having her give the backstory and weaving in her life story. It is in the history she walks us through where you see that she has lived a philosophical life, the insights of which she expresses through country music.

Very fun! I love Dolly Parton and it was so cool to hear the stories behind many of her songs. She’s one of the few celebrities that I look up to.
