I imagine this is a wonderful read for true Dolly fans, of which I am not. It was fun to hear some of the lore of her songwriting, but that's really all this is. She barely scratches the surface about her life and she shines a golden light over everything; it got a bit dull and repetitive after a while.
First off, I truly appreciate what Dolly Parton has done in the world and admire her legacy; even ignoring her musical career, her impacts with childhood literacy and helping to fund one of the COVID vaccines are remarkable. However, I hadn't realized the true framing of this title when I encountered it, and as such, I was not quite the right audience.
I had picked this up on sale due to its effusive reviews and thought it would be more akin to a memoir. Instead, it is essentially a long interview about a host of her songs; a snippet is played, and then she speaks about it in context for a couple minutes. There are 175 songs; in an audiobook that is just over five hours, that doesn't allow for much complexity or depth. Listeners will gain some understanding of her journey and some of the personalities she had opportunity to work alongside, but this is more suitable to those already familiar with her oeuvre. All the same, I'm still appreciative I am continuing to make progress on my goal to intentionally read and listen to books I've owned for years.

Dolly Parton is such a talented person. I listened to this on audiobook and hearing her talk about her creative process was a treat.
This book also highlights how humble and kind she is as well. It was lovely hearing her speak with such love about her family and those that have been a part of her life.

Definitely listen to the audiobook for this one! It's more like a casual interview and you get to hear snippets of her songs before she talks about them! I love how much she loves everything she's done. She knows it's led to who she's become. I think she says almost every song is her favorite or that she'd like to hear someone else use it. It gets a little repetitive but you can't get mad at the fact she's proud and enjoys what she's good at, making stories into songs; or rather, being a songteller.

Dolly Parton is a gift to this world, and none of us are wise enough to understand how lucky we are that she has graced us with her talent.

This audiobook is somewhere between an interview and a list of songs Dolly Parton talks about-- songs that are her favorite or she rerecords because she thinks they should be hits or could be a hit for someone else. Six hours of repetition. Talks a bit about other artists she's worked with, her background, and how she loves to tell a story. This book should be as great as she is but her coauthor really let her down.

Read by Dolly herself and includes snippets of her songs. Great stories of her life and how she came up with some of the lyrics and songs and the people she has worked with.
