This audiobook kept me smiling and singing all the way through. Essentially a long form interview with Dolly to hear the stories and inspiration behind her favorite songs she’s ever written. It gets repetitive near the end (of course every song in this book is “one of her favorites”) but you really get a sense of who she is as a writer and a person.

Listened to this or it would have been a two. Dolly is interesting and enjoying her life stories. However there came a pattern of saying she loves each song and everyone she worked with was lovely. Basically she would talk about a certain song and hear a 5 second clip.
I listened to this through audiobooks so Dolly herself told these stories. She is such a positive person that she even spun the bad details into learning opportunities for herself. There was such joy in her voice as she recounted the significance of certain songs she wrote throughout her very long successful career. One thing that stood out to me was how much she cherished the songs she wrote and even if they weren't her most popular ones she is still hopeful that they eventually get recorded by other artists. She is a national treasure for her contributions to music and hopefully she is remembered just the way she wants to be: A songteller.
Interesting stories but a bit oddly formatted as you can tell at times she was talking with someone who isn't on the recording. I was disappointed there wasn't anything about the original version of 9 to 5 as it's the first of her songs I remember hearing when I was young.
Did the audiobook for this and highly recommend going that way- she feels so completely unscripted it just felt like a conversation with her. The downside of that is that it was a little less coherent/organized as I anticipated? But my goodness what an amazing woman who just totally embodies GENUINE and not interested in comparison or other people’s expectation because she is on a mission to use her talents to the fullest and doesn’t care what anyone thinks of where she’s come from, how she looks, etc etc etc

Who doesn't love Dolly Parton? This book is what it says on the tin, Dolly going through a selection of her songs and talking about what inspired her writing process. The audiobook is like an interview with Dolly and basically feels like you're just spending a nice afternoon with her.
