I don't like country, but I love Dolly. Was best as an audio book, as it felt more conversational. Definitely a good time.

I love Dolly's music and loved listening to her voice on the audio book, but unfortunately this was really repetitive and surface level. About half of it was them playing a snippet of a song and then Dolly going "oh this is one of my favorites, you know how it goes "(repeats exact song lyrics that just played)", I just love that." And that's it!

Dolly is a gem

I bought the hardback of this book and when I received it I knew I was going to have to listen to the audio version. This is really more of a coffee table book so maybe not a good choice for book club. The actual physical book is full of photos, copies of the music, and even pictures of handwritten songs. The audio version reads like an interview. Dolly is quite macabre— you can tell she was heavily influenced by the old ballads full of death and other hardships. I like Dolly but I’m not much of a country music historian.

This was a book club pick and I was just not able to finish it. It seemed choppy and read more like a very long and uninteresting interview. I adore Dolly and so this review makes me sad. If you want to delve into Dolly's life, I would recommend another biography.

I mainly listened to this audiobook but I borrowed a digital copy as well, which I mainly used to look at the pictures that were included. The narration of the audiobook was done by Dolly herself and it was a joy to listen to her talk about her creative process, her early life, her rise to fame and her personal and professional relationships. I have always appreciated Dolly's wisdom about life and this was so full of connections that could be made to all parts of how we treat people, how we deal with conflict and how we stay true to our own beliefs. But at the heart of it is the story of how she is so much more than a dumb blond, she is clearly a very clever and down to earth businesswoman with a really big heart. FYI Dolly's Imagination Library has expanded into Canada and I am curious if there are groups that have used the program and where they are located. And now I need to go to Dollywood!
