I listened to this & loved hearing Dolly’s voice & songs. But she did say “this song is one of my favorites” an awful lot…

I listen to the audiobook on this one. It's basically a long interview with Dolly about her inspiration for various songs. The woman was an absolute workhorse, she wrote over 3,000 songs and she says she's not out of ideas yet! It's a little repetitive, I think all of the Dolly's songs are her favorite songs and she doesn't say a bad word about hardly anybody. But she's so smart and charming that you don't really care.

Almost interview style with Dolly.

Earlier this year, I realized I tend to read make biographies, so I decided to find more female perspectives and was thrilled to hear about Dolly's new book. I wish I would've investigated more, because I didn't know this was really just about her songs, not her life story.

With this in mind, I still enjoyed this book. The audiobook is truly fantastic, as they wove in song clips to introduce each section, which added more depth to this production. It honestly didn't feel like a book, it felt more like a podcast because of how a male narrator would introduce each section, connecting or pivoting from the previous anecdote.

I learned more about Dolly through her explanations of the origins of her songs. I do wish she would actually narrow down her favorite songs, because I swear she said almost each song was her best and her favorite... That got old quickly.

I didn't realize how little I knew of her song catalog until this book and am going to start listening to her more. I knew about her Imagination Library program from my involvement in Rotary International and have watched some of her films. Otherwise, I'm shocked that I recognized just a handful of songs from this talented artist. I can't wait to get to know her more through her music.

I do hope she writes a memoir someday, because I think we all need to hear her story through her voice. It shouldn't be rare that a woman is successful as an artist and entrepreneur, is married, and doesn't have kids; however, we need more representation of these different lifestyles to help others feel more accepted. As a woman who doesn't want kids, I'm inspired to see what Dolly's legacy has been and how she's stayed true to herself this time. I was hoping to hear more about this part of her life and that was a failure of my own that I didn't research the book more.

Be that as it may, this audiobook was a treat for the ears and inspired me to add more Dolly to my music library!

I really respect Dolly and it was fun to hear her philosophies and life experiences. I’m not a Dolly connoisseur so the way the memoir is organized, explaining the stories behind her songs was not the way I personally would have like to hear her story. I’m still glad I read it, but it took a while since I didn’t know so many songs. The audiobook was great, it felt like an interview

“I look back on all that now, and I realize this helped to build my character. It helped me build my own strength. So even the bad times were good. There were good times as well as bad times. But that's how memories are made, and that's why I'm sitting here today.”

This was such a fascinating book. I'm a huge Dolly fan, and I loved learning about the stories behind each and every one of her songs, as well as gain some insight into her life behind-the-scenes. She's such a sweet, genuine person, and her story is incredible to follow. Long may this legend reign.
