I love this book. It's a nice coffee table book with all the pictures and lyrics, I also downloaded the audiobook version when combining the two it was a 5 star

I love that this is just set up as a casual interview with Dolly talking about her songs. She is a masterful interviewee, and I could listen to her talk forever. Say a bad word about Dolly and I will fight you.

Wonderful! Listening to the audiobook really makes this special, Dolly personally tells you her story in a sweet conversational way that's so warm and vibrant.

I love Dolly, and audio is definitely a better way to digest this book. It just felt way more like an interview or blog to me. Loved listening to her voice. I would’ve like a longer snippet of the songs.

Dolly gets 5/5 but I’m rating this project a 4/5 because the audiobook and the print version are not the same.

I bought this in print when it came out in 2020, and it’s like a coffee table book—beautiful big photos with captions, printed song lyrics and overall just a really nice display piece that’s clearly been edited well and is easy to just kind of flip through like an encyclopedia of most of Dolly’s work. I haven’t read it cover to cover, and I don’t think it’s the kind of book most people would consume that way either.

This week, I was looking on Libby for a Dolly Parton memoir and saw this title was also a 5 hour audiobook. I was curious if it would follow the print book word for word or if she’d sing all the songs, so I listened to it.

The audiobook seems to be the original interviews that were condensed and illustrated for the print edition. This felt like listening to a podcast instead of the narrated book. There’s more repetition and it’s more conversational. I didn’t mind hearing Dolly tell her stories more organically instead of her reading them from the print edition, and the sung interludes in between stories were nice (these were not the full songs though).

Still, this recording feels like it should have been a visual mini-series for promoting the project instead of the “audiobook.” Listening to it, I felt like I was missing the photos of the print book, as well as her facial expressions as she talked about things, or even clips of home videos or performances, etc. She talks a lot about the songs that became mini films on Netflix, but this audiobook didn’t seem to be in partnership with Netflix.

There are details in the print version that weren’t in the audiobook and vice versa. The two iterations are totally different experiences.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Part of me gives it a 5 because it's Dolly, and Dolly Parton kicks ass. Period. Another part of me gives it a 3 because it wanted more than micro-stories about her songs. So, we landed on 4 stars...now I need to find me a Dolly Parton album that has most of the songs mentioned.

If you’re a fan of Dolly’s or want to be, please drop this book and go listen to the podcast, “Dolly Patton’s America.” The podcast shines even brighter after listening to this poorly organized, extremely repetitive, and downright boring audiobook. Dolly is a genius songwriter and pioneer businesswoman with a rich history, but you won’t really learn that in this book. Here. I’ll save you some time. “Then I wrote this little song and it was one of my favorite little songs. I had the best time with (fill in the name of countless famous people) and I don’t regret a thing.” Now, repeat that sentiment hour after hour. There. You’re welcome.

Dolly is an American icon and such a great example of how to better the world when you’ve been successful. This felt like an interview with her reminiscing about stories from her writing and life. An amazing woman and interesting to learn more about her.
