I think this would be better if you are a fan of her music. I’m a huge fan of the human but not so much the music so it was kinda meh.

I listened to the audiobook of this and oh my, what a treat that was! Dolly narrates the story of her life and her music and just listening to her voice was so soothing and so lyrical. I would be interested in someday picking up the hard cover of this to see how it looks and be able to look at the pictures but I highly recommend the audiobook, especially if you're like me and aren't a big audiobook fan. But I am a huge Dolly Parton fan so for me, this was perfection.

If you have the opportunity to read this as an audiobook, I would. The interview style of the reading really feels like Dolly is relaxed when telling her story.

I wanted to love this so much more than I did. I think my biggest issue with it was the structure. Each chapter was semi-chronological and semi-thematic, containing songs written by Dolly. The chapter would start with a little description and then would dive into the songs. For each, you would see a song title, a little description, the lyrics, and then Dolly talking about either the writing, context, or meaning it held for her. The Dolly commentary was amazing, but I had a rough time with all of the song lyrics. I feel like it would be a more pleasant read for people who love poetry; for me, it felt like it slowed the progression of the narrative. I’m sure they chose all of the songs they did for a reason, but I think fewer of them with more commentary would have been more up my alley and closer to what I was expecting. I did absolutely love all of the photos though. Those were everything I wanted them to be!

I read this in conjunction with [b:Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark|55809879|Yours Cruelly, Elvira Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark|Cassandra Peterson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1617706442l/55809879._SY75_.jpg|87022089] and the two together were a wonderful pairing since, like everyone else in my generation, plus some of those in the tail end of the generation before me and the beginning of the generation after, I've always associated Dolly and Elvira.

This is less a memoir or autobiography and more a long interview thematically designed around Dolly's songs, specifically the ones she loves most.

There’s a lot of circling back, sometimes repetitively, to specific moments, thoughts, or people, and not in a logical fashion. It's almost as if the person editing the content didn't know how to collate said content in a more organized fashion. It could have been edited better so that each part was a full story, an album, if you will, instead of stories that were then repeated later, sometimes verbatim, in a filler-ish fashion.

Regardless, this is absolutely worth listening to.
There is something just so comforting about Dolly Parton. Is it because she has been a visible presence throughout my entire life, from the records next to my grandparents' turntable to my closest friend's father's absolute crush on her to her Imagination Library? Or is it just Dolly saturation from the 60's on? Probably both. Whatever the case, to quote Dolly, "I will always love you" and I am glad to have been fortunate to live during her era.

Perfect to read right after a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains and Dollywood. Reading snippets of so many songs was great!

I had the opportunity to experience the audiobook and highly recommend it. As another reviewer said, I can’t imagine reading it when we have the gift of Dolly herself sharing these stories. Highly recommended!
