4.5/5 - Told by Dolly (listening to the audiobook felt like listening to a VH1 “Behind the Music”) and filled to the brim with her charisma and charm. I only know a handful of her songs but loved hearing her talk about songwriting and where songs come from for her.

Lol I listened to this book, and Dolly didn’t read the book. She was just chatting. This was basically a 5 hour podcast. Every song was one of her favorite songs she ever wrote, she said. Not a masterpiece, but it made me forget that I was depressed for a week!

Set up a bit like an interview about her different songs. Narrator by Dolly herself. She is a national treasure.

I listened to the audio book and it was a treat to listen to - Dolly Parton loves so many of her songs and colleagues and true to her personality, doesn't make any digs or say anything untoward.

I could literally listen to Dolly talk and tell stories forever.

I like Dolly Parton but this book on kindle didn't work for me. The audio was probably better, as evidenced by the reviews saying how great it was to hear her voice. It felt disjointed.

Preface: I love Dolly. I have admired her music, her style, her confidence, and her philanthropy for decades. I am not an unbiased reader.

I'm glad I listened to the audiobook for all of the song snippets spliced in between the sections. However, it took me several weeks to finish this book, because I was not compelled to finish it. There wasn't a clear structure -- vaguely chronological, but not precisely -- and the interviewer who was supposedly guiding the conversation did not ask anything new. Any Dolly fan will know the story-behind-the-song for "Jolene," the little red-haired girl asking for an autograph, but that is about as deep as most of the stories go. Dolly is, by definition, a songteller, because her songs speak for themselves and tell her stories, whether they are fictional or autobiographical. A significant portion of these stories was Dolly reciting the lyrics in almost tautology of "the song is about what it's about."

I enjoyed hearing her narrate, and I love hearing her sing, but I think I would prefer a more in-depth and structured biography to get any real Stories behind the music.

If you're just a casual Dolly fan, the podcast series "Dolly Parton's America" is way more interesting.

She’s a national treasure. I would choose violence to protect her.

I listened to the audio version of this and it was a very delightful way to get a bit more information about the stories behind Dolly's songs. It feels a little bit like an interview that we, the listeners, get the inside scoop on.

Delightful and entertaining (albeit easily forgettable...sorry Dolly!).
