Just when I thought I couldn’t love Dolly more…this book proved me wrong. What a delight.
I LOVE Dolly Parton! I adore her. I love her as a singer. I love her as an actress. But most importantly, I think, I love her as a person. What a lovely human being! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audio book, but I have to say that it really isn't an audio book. It isn't formatted like a book or an autobiography. This "book" felt more like sitting around the kitchen table and listening to your grandma tell you all the fun stories about growing up in the good old days. This was just Dolly sharing super short snippets of stories about the stories that she tells through her music. Through her stories you can really feel the humanity of Dolly. She's not perfect. She's not a saint. But she is super fun and super real and super good. What a life she has led! This audio book made me want to go immediately and listen to all of her songs. It would take me a bit to get through them. She's a super prolific song writer, and through those songs she tells the story of her life and lives of those she has encountered through the years. Priceless.
A couple of things I liked about this collection of stories:
I loved how Dolly would always say, "This is my favorite song." ... like 15 different times at least. The truth is that I think she really, really liked a lot of her songs, and it was hard for her to pick her favorites.
I loved her story about how she first heard Whitney Houston sing I Will Always Love You while she was driving, and she had to pull over because she was so full of emotion after hearing Whitney's rendition.
I loved her stories of her mountain home and the people she loves from those mountains.
I loved how positive and happy and fun she sounded. She's had hard times in her life, but she manages to see the world through a lens of happiness and joy.
This was a bit of a departure from the normal books I listen to, but I'm glad I grabbed this one. It was a ton of fun and super interesting. I really liked it.

For the most part, I really enjoyed this little book. It's less of something you sit down to read and more of a nice coffee table book. Still, it was fun reading through all the stories that inspired some of Dolly's best songs. I didn't use the audiobook though I know everyone says you should. Personally, listening to the songs as I read was enough for me. I could hear Dolly in my head when reading her commentary.

I liked the song title chapter. It was always clear what time things were happening. I feel like something were focused on too much though and that when things were talked about a lot there wasn't much introspection on it. Overall I feel like the book could use more introspection however I think the focus is supposed to be more on Dolly's music than her as a person.
I absolutely loved listening to this. It was slightly disjointed and certainly isn't a chronological account, but it was an extremely enjoyable listen.
I liked it! I didn’t realize how much Dolly wrote, so it was cool to hear her story through her lyrics. Good read!
I truly believe that you should listen to autobiographies if they are read by the subject. This felt like you were sitting on a porch listening to Dolly tell you life stories and thought processes. I learned a lot on her process and it added to what I've come to learn....never judge a person until you talk with them and learn their story. I love how she started her book give away program. This book also helped me complete my summer library reading program. Woo hoo!
