Oh gosh where do I even begin. I’ve been a Dolly fan for as long as I can remember. And this book is definitely one of my favorite works from her.
I listened to the audiobook, which has clips of each song she talks about which was a welcome surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her talk about her many works in her own words and own voice- it very much felt like I was talking to an old friend.
Listening to what all she went through had me laughing as much as crying. Learning that she too is tender hearted made this book all the more relatable.
This book will tug at your heartstrings; but will leave you with a warm feeling as if you just left her cabin after spending a Tennessee afternoon with Parton herself

88: Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics by Dolly Parton...listened to this as narrated by Dolly herself while out walking.
Please know that when I review books I consider not only the content but also the writing, and so the rating on this book probably has more to do with the latter than the former. It seems to be mostly Dolly responding orally to topics and prompts. That said there is a lot of repetition...and a lot of content that is not composed of complete sentences or even complete thoughts or responses.
Otherwise, I enjoyed this time spent with Ms. Parton, her voice in my ear. I did enjoy hearing more her own personal stories than appear in some of the movies about her or some of the other knowledge I previously possessed. And I especially enjoyed the musical components, actually, and the times when she just recited the lyrics from any of her many, many songs. I enjoyed hearing about the impetus for many of those songs and the fact that not always were those she expected to do well the ones that actually did. And I enjoyed hearing about collaborative efforts. Though I have to say, far too little was said about Kenny Rogers for my liking. I have been choked up FOR her ever since his passing...and it is a timing thing, I guess, that this did not contain more of that.
And I did also grow weary of the same responses, "That's probably my favorite," "That was probably my most clever," etc. The actual words felt less and less sincere or original the more I heard the same "stamp" on another song.
I am guessing that die-hard Dolly fans will not be disappointed but satisfied to also spend this time with her and her thoughts and explanations.

Fabulous. I love Dolly. And I feel bad about all the jokes about her that I laughed at as a young person. I didn’t understand the misogyny behind them, and I didn’t understand how often women are misjudged and underestimated based on looks alone.

I really wanted to love this book, but it was so discombobulated, rambling, and repetitive. :( She’s such a genuine sweetheart, and I enjoyed learning how so many of her songs came about. Unfortunately, it was terribly put together.
Have you ever wanted to spend 5 hours listening to Dolly Parton's precious voice talking about her whole life?
Do yourself a favor and get this as an audiobook. Hearing Dolly Parton tell you the stories behind her songs and how she's lived her life is as soothing as it is entertaining.
Big Dolly fan. She is super humble and such a fun person to read about. Highly recommend.
