The Haunting of Beatrix Greene was hard for me to get through. I was drawn in by the premise, but the execution was a bit predictable and I kept getting distracted by the chapters being labeled as episodes as if it was a TV series.
I also didn’t find myself connected to the characters and that made it a little more difficult to stick with.

Who doesn’t love a good gothic story? This was a super fast read that left me really satisfied. I’m looking forward to checking out other works by this author.
Many thanks to NetGalley & Serialbox for this ARC!

Beatrix Greene is a spiritual medium. Or at least that's what others believe. She's actually a fraud who knows ghosts and spirits aren't real. But when she's offered a high paying job by a Dr. James Ashbury to conduct a séance at the infamously haunted Ashbury Manor she can't say no. But James has his own secrets and motive for wanting her there.
What happens from there is literally out of a Netflix series. This story is told in one big chapter or season and episodes, 9 total, which gives it the feel of a Netflix show but in book form. The story was super fast paced and action-packed. I couldn't tell the difference between the authors or their writing styles. The writing was very atmospheric and I could very much envision myself walking through this creepy manor and hear all the creaks and groans of the floorboards. This is a really creepy, gothic haunted house story with some paranormal and romantic elements as well. The story takes place over the course of one long night. It goes from spooky to creepy to frightful all within the span of a few pages.
I would definitely recommend this if you want a spooky, paranormal gothic read! This is also displayed as season or vol. 1, so I would definitely be intrigued to pick up the next one if they came out with a follow up.

I really enjoy this story, it was small but it definitely kept you on your toes and scary also. It is great Halloween story full of ghosts, demons and some great characters especially Beatrix Greene. She is strong independent women who didn't except what she discovers about herself and what happens to her. It was good and I hope we see more Beatriz Greene in the future.

**I received episode 1 from netgalley in exchange for a review**
I am new to serialbox but WOW I love it already. As the name suggests, it releases serial fiction (so you get a new "episode" each week). I am not sure if every series is done the same, but this one can be consumed as an ebook or audiobook. I chose to try this out with audio and I'm super glad I did. There were multiple talented narrators, as well as sound effects and music. The writing and audio-production have really captured that atmospheric gothic-romance feel. I love where this is going so far... I already went ahead and subscribed to the rest of the series.

I didn't know before picking up this book that this was episode one of a serial-but this does read like a standalone even if the ending is a little open-ended.
Beatrix Greene earns her living as a spiritual medium - though she herself does not believe in ghosts or any supernatural. All she believes is an extra something emotional within her that manages to empathise when it comes to her clients.
James Walker is a sceptic who has disproven and unmasked many spiritual mediums for the frauds they are.
So, when he makes a monetary offer to Ms. Greene to spend one night at the haunted Ashbury Manor to (dis) prove the claims of haunting as groundless-she accepts; not knowing what this single night would bring for both Beatrix and James.
.A gothic horror, this actually was more than I had been expecting-eerie, creepy and horrifying. I actually enjoyed the story far more than I had expected to; along with the romance that develops between James and Beatrix.
I do not know if I will stick with this serial; but I would not say no to picking up the next episode if so desired.

A delightfully spooky and short gothic haunted house adventure.
Beatrix Greene is a fake medium who uses her perception and acting talents to develop an impressive reputation as a leading spiritualist in London by convincing people she is communicating with their deceased loved ones. Dr. James Walker, a wealthy skeptic and researcher, hires her to accompany him and a few others to a reportedly haunted house to definitively determine if it is indeed haunted.
Upon arriving, Beatrix sets up her usual farcical séance and prepares to put on a show. However, something does, in fact, answer her, and it is angry and violent and will not let them leave until it is finished.
The plot moves along at a good clip and it is engrossing. Speaking of gross, there is one particularly gross and gruesome scene that will make horror fans darkly chuckle and turn up their nose. My only complaint is the instant romance that occurs, which felt rather unlikely and out of place. (To illustrate, when my husband and I were newlyweds we lived in a tiny and disgusting apartment with mice, and knowing there mice in the room with you at night is a bit of a mood-killer. I imagine having a ghost/demon in the house would similarly douse the romance.)
Overall, I enjoyed it and would read a sequel.
This is being realized by SerialBox as a weekly serial, but I read it all at once. I believe it would be easy to read weekly, however, because the chapters are clearly delineated and the plot is not overly complicated.

I think it is an excellent accomplishment when three authors can weave a seamless narrative.
Pros:
Fast Paced
Gore-galore
Good side characters
I won't rehash the plot because this little novella is so short I may spoil something accidently. The two leads are compelling and tortured by their own particular traumas. The side characters are fleshed out enough that the could really have their own novels. The pacing never lets up which is good since there isn't a lot of complications. The gore is fantastic and while some of the climactic scenes were a bit cheesy, the gore of the climax was not.
Cons:
Obvious Bad Guy
Very short
The length isnt too bad I guess. Sometimes its nice to have a quick, engaging read. But man the bad guy was cellophane levels of see-through and while there was more to the story than that (thankfully) it was still annoying to see something coming like that.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an early copy.

This was a fun ghost read with a little romance thrown in. It was a perfect quick halloween read to get into the creepy, ghost story vibe!
