This book had an interesting format. Instead of chapters, it had episodes like you're watching a TV show. It would actually make a fantastic tv show.
Beatrix Greene is a spiritual medium who doesn't believe in ghosts. She's confronted by a scientist, James Walker, and asked to stay in Ashbury Manner and conduct a seance. That seance opens the door to dark secrets and spirits. All the characters were likeable and relatable. The house was creepy and the story kept me guessing and wanting to know what was going to happen next. All in all, if you're looking for a fast paced, spooky read, this is a good choice.

I almost didn’t survive this... But wow! The writing was wonderful! It sunk its claws on me and wouldn’t let go. It scared me so many times. Even for a non-horror lover, this book was great. Dare I say, I’m eagerly anticipating the rest of the serials!

Beatrix’s character somehow transfixed me. I loved her character arc, how she started in the story, then everything she went through, and ultimately tapping into what was right to be able to have success. I cannot wait for more adventures by her.

This is a classic haunted house story written by three different authors and I wouldn’t have remembered that if I didn’t notice at the top of the chapter. I thought the writing flowed smoothly across the three writers. There are two POVs Beatrix and James throughout the book. It was a ghost story with a bit of romance. I enjoyed the characters even the secondary ones and I was satisfied with the overall story and ending.

I did receive this as an ARC through Netgalley and Serial Box. My review is completely voluntary

The Haunting of Beatrix Greene was not what I expected. The paranormal elements were great, and I loved the cohesion between the house, ancestry, and other elements (do not want to spoil!). I was not a huge of the body horror; however, this is a personal opinion that effected my enjoyment- for others this may be a plus! It was a quick, fast-paced thriller that had me at the edge of my seat throughout.

a certainly fun spook! it's a good october read for starters with spooky stuffs, and i love the victorian england setting this book had, definitely a big fan of those things, and it's not that scary or anything horrifying but definitely a good read and would recommend it!

“Step into your rightful role. Do not disappoint us. You were born for this. You EARNED it...
This legacy is yours by blood right. It is your legacy. YOUR LEGACY”(101).

In Victorian England, one can hear whispers of the great medium Beatrix Greene. She brings closure to her clients without parlor tricks or occult props. None of it is real, until a scientist invites Beatrix to Ashbury Manor. A home with a sinister history spanning over a millennium. As the seance begins, the small supernatural team will awaken darkness beyond expectations.

“Rattled to its very core, the foundation itself shifting, the windows vibrating in their frames, and somewhere in the distance, Beatrix heard the sound of breaking glass, of shattering wood” (78).

This episodic Victorian Gothic story about a gripping haunted house is filled with a compelling plot and characters. It begins at a slow pace, but one inch forward and you are thrown into madness. I found it to be a very easy and rapid read, finishing it in one sitting. The visually horrifying presented would be terrifying for most. Personally, I wanted more.

“Miiiiiiiine”, it sighed… blood slowly dribbling from the corner of her mouth. “Mine now, no matter how far you run. Nowhere to hide, Albie. Not this time” (92).

Both Beatrix Greene and Amanda are presented as Second-Wave Feminist’s. Yet, Beatrix falls for James within 24 hours. Their romance is paired with some cheesy lines and felt melodramatic. James is a scientist fueled by his hidden past to gain evidence of the supernatural’s possible existence. He keeps much of himself hidden until the ladder of the novel. I enjoyed some of his thoughts and seeing how much power the house truly had. James really pushes the recurring theme centering around how others make a spectacle and profit off the tragedy of another.

“It was his life, his tragedies that had been cheapened for people’s entertainment with figurines of what they called the “murderous mad woman,” or little wooden replicas of a bloody hunting knife… reduced to a horror story, when she had been so much more before she went mad” (59).

There are a plethora of haunted house stories but Ashbury Manor had aspects that really pull the right strings for me. An unapologetic Victorian Gothic filled with the supernatural, violence and romance. I would recommend this to lovers of the genre or anyone that enjoyed Crimson Peak.

“She would never forget the noises. His agonizing screams. The shearing crack of bone, splintering like a piece of firewood under an axe” (84).

Thank you to NetGalley, SerialBox and all contributors for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a pleasant surprise and I devoured it! This was such a perfect read for spooky October.

I was really drawn into our main character, Beatrix Greene, and her journey of self discovery. Brought into an allegedly haunted house to confirm the existence of ghosts, Beatrix is still skeptical herself. However, after spending only a few moments in the house, she is shocked by what she is feeling and experiencing. Throw in some witty friends, a slow-burn romance, and some truly effed up ghosts, I could not stop reading, and finished this book within 24 hours.

The layout leads me to believe there will be more to come from these three talented authors, and I can't wait! I definitely recommend picking this one up! It lost half a star for me because I wish it was longer.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I was drawn to request The Haunting of Beatrix Greene due to Rachel Hawkins being listed as one of the contributors, an author I am familiar with from Twitter, although I have yet to read one of her books. I was not aware until I did some research that this book was not only a serial, but would be primarily featured, at least initially on an app called “Serial Box,” which sounds like the type I’ve avoided due to my issues with episodic stories, with exception of entire collections. However, even with that in mind, I still felt this was a fun story, although I don’t know if I’d have consumed it in its primary format.

While the story is written by three authors, and not in sequence, I like that the sections flow well into each other, so it can work whether you read each episode on its own or binge them all at all. If I had not been told at the beginning of each episode who the author was, I would not have know different people wrote different parts.

I liked the way the story puts a twist on the fake medium concept by having something mysterious happen when Beatrix is hired. There’s also a lovely sweet romance between Beatrix and James as events unfold.

It’s rather too short to go into any real depth, however, for the projected format, it is well suited. Whether this is worth trying is down to your interest in investing money in an app (although they offer the first episode free and offer both individual episode and season pass options; price indicated above is for the season pass). However, there appears to also be plans for a traditional ebook release early next year.

Beatrix Greene is known for being a sweet and discreet spiritual medium, one who refuses to give in to cheap gimmicks to get her clients money. Instead, she relies on her empathy to help them feel more at peace with losing their loved ones. When she is invited to stay a night at a supposedly haunted mansion and prove or disprove ghosts' existence during a seance, she finds herself in over her head with both real life and the afterlife.

This book was the perfect way to start the early Halloween season, and a great way to spend the afternoon or evening. (I personally would follow it up with a couple of episodes of Penny Dreadful to add to the Victorian experience.) The story is a little predictable, but still a very fun read, and I knew I would be up late reading once I got to the last 100 pages. I highly recommend it for readers of the genre, as it doesn't disappoint.

I loved this creepy throwback to Victorian horror stories. And the fact that there are three authors was great! I honestly would not have noticed the change in voice if the author wasn't listed at the beginning of the episodes, and that just tells me how well the three worked together.

I love Beatrix! She is the right mix of scared woman trying to make a place for herself in the world while trying to come to terms with her powers, and tough-as-nails badass who goes for what she wants. I hope that there are plans to continue with Beatrix in the future.
