This story had a fun and interesting concept and it was a quick read, but that’s about the end of positive things I can say about it. It’s written by multiple authors (each write a few individual chapters).

There is close to zero world-building, no character development, and absolutely none of the slow build of tension that is crucial to making stories like this work. Because of this, I really didn’t find myself having any emotional investment in the characters and the story. The haunting/supernatural elements relied on overused tropes, and I rolled my eyes at a number of points. There just wasn’t a whole lot of depth to it. I actually tend to quite like fluffy, pulpy, or trashy stories, but this was a little too poorly constructed for me to enjoy it.

Some positive things I can say are that the concept was fun, and the writing flowed smoothly even with the multiple authors. The story had continuity, even if it didn’t have a lot of depth.

If you’re looking for a fun and quick read that isn’t too spooky, this might work for you. But if you’re an avid reader of horror literature, this is one you can skip.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this! The serial nature was rather interesting since it felt like each chapter ended on a "next time on..." sort of vibe. This was very easy to get through, and I did like reading it as one volume. In terms of all of the authors, I actually didn't notice much of a difference between the writing style from each section to another.

The setting was fantastic! I really liked this time period where spiritualism was very popular. The house was great - there's certainly some creepy elements here! I love the ghosts and trying to figure out what was going on. It also starts off with a bang, so I definitely enjoyed the introduction to this story. Beatrix was great - she's very clever and good at what she does, so I found her to be an enjoyable main character. I do think the romance was rushed, but I did like where it was headed.

Overall, if you're looking for a quick Halloween read, I'd recommend this!

I received a copy of this for review from the publisher via NetGalley - thank you! All opinions are my own.

This is a clever style for a book. This was originally published as an ebook series, where each “episode” (think chapter) was published independently from the others. All the episodes are centered around the main story but written by different authors and therefore to,d slightly differently. This change in focus is interesting as a presentation. I enjoyed the main story about Beatrix and her helper, who are in the fortune telling business. A mysterious man comes to town and declares that he can prove that fortune telling is fake. The story goes from there in many unique ways. There is a great atmosphere and twists and turns as you read.
I recommend this for those that would like a mixture of genres in an atmospheric spooky tale.

This is an enjoyable spooky short story. I wish it was a bit longer to allow for more character development. I liked Beatrix a lot, it was fun to see her come into her power and surprise everyone, including herself!

Beatrix is a well known spiritual medium. James Walker is a scientist in town to expose those who are tricking the grieving. Though he's not entirely a disbeliever, so he invites Beatrix to spend one night at Ashbury Manor, to either prove or disprove the rumors it is haunted.

This is a great ghost story, and proof that things/people are not always as they appear. There's murder and spirits and family secrets. It's a perfect read right before Halloween, and I'll definitely look for more in this series.

Many thanks to NetGalley for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

If you are looking for a creepy gothic tale of a haunted house with a bit of romance that you can read in one or two sittings, then The Haunting of Beatrix Greene is perfection! The main character is Beatrix, a woman who earns her livelihood as a medium, but doesn't actually believe in ghosts. So when she's offered a substantial sum to determine whether a supposedly cursed estate is haunted, she thinks it's easy money. Little does she know what she is getting herself into....

The bulk of the story takes place in a single night where things go from spooky to horrifying. This makes it the perfect scope for a novella and I definitely recommend this if you want a bit of gothic horror in shorter form. It was fun with interesting characters, and if it was a bit predictable at times, I really didn't mind. Definitely one worth checking out! Do note that this is a horror novel and includes violence, death, evil spirits, the past death of a child, talk of losing parents, references to domestic violence, and a couple of more gruesome scenes. Okay, this was definitely spooky.

I'm not really sure how the whole volume/series/episode thing is supposed to work with this but, whatever, it'll all work itself out eventually right? Also, I received an ARC of this via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

So let's review.

I really like Beatrix' character. She has an interesting skill set and I want to know more about how things this works for her and why she's able to do it.

Henry is also a super fun character. He's the classic goofy side-kick and I just dang love him.

James is our somewhat love interest and I love him too. Honestly the character work here was great.

I loved the spooky haunted house vibes. I mean, any time a house comes with a past, I'm all for it!

The way the story played out was great. The ended was good, I liked where things ended. I would definitely like to see more from this series in the future!

Ahhhh I loved this one! It had the perfect amount of gothic atmosphere, mystery, and swoon! The creepy factors were also a lot of fun! I’m a huge fan of character driven books and this gave me just what I needed!

I received the electronic version of this book from Netgalley as an advance reading copy.

This was a quick read and had a very gothic feel to it, very similar to A Haunting in Hill House, I believe if this was ever made into a TV show, the Hill House cast would be perfect for it.

Pros:
1. A quick read.
2. Fairly descriptive.
3. Rather than horror, this book evoked terror which I really enjoyed.

Cons:
1. Lack of character development, so they can be quickly forgotten.
2. The ending where Beatrix Greene turns into the Phoenix from X-Men's Phoenix saga was hilarious. Wish it was better crafted with easters eggs or something.

I had heard so much about the audiobook version and was so excited to find it on NetGalley.

The writing is simplistic and really easy to get through. The atmosphere is great and there's a decent amount of gore and scares.
Beatrix is a medium who doesn't believe in spirits. She along with her friend Harry is called to Ashbury manor -the evil of the story, a haunted house- by a James Walker to hold a seance. There they meet Amanda- a journalist there to capture the seance and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle- yes the author.

The characters are fleshed out. I really loved the relationship between Amanda and Beatrix, both amazing independent women hoping to help each other out. But there was not a lot of plot. Especially the second half, the character choices are a little questionable. The story followed a horror story formula and was pretty predictable.

Still I did enjoy this story and recommend it to anyone who wants a simple haunted house story.

*Thank you NetGalley, Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, Vicky Alvear Schecter and Serial box for providing me with an e-arc for an honest review.*

Great premise, spooky and gory atmosphere. Cliche romance (very insta-lovy).

I liked the beginning, I was really intrigued but the interest dwindled over time, especially because of the romance that happened really fast. Sometimes the characters felt a bit too modern for the era. There is gore in this story, and it is creepy!
