3,5ish. The first part was genius. Really loved it. Thought I had something really special on my hands. During the second part I found my attention drifting. Note, the second part is full of sex. Sexy scenes that are very well written. And still, I found myself bored. How? Isabel's transition from abhorring Eva to becoming ridiculously obsessed with her felt so abrupt. Like I didn't get the relationship at all. Then there was the big reveal, and that excited me again. Eva's diary. I thought, whoa. I was wrong. It was all leading here. So fascinating to learn more about this part of Dutch history. I had no idea. It was a gut punch. But then the ending. Yeah, I don't know. It fell flat for me again. Overall this was really well written, I devoured it. But I left the table feeling a bit hungry still.

Belonging, devotion, devastating grief and loss and love and still hope, lesbian yearning - I never had a chance not to utterly fall in love with this book.
I love how creative the writing was. It was so captivating, as well as the concept itself. I’m a sucker for yearners and this was nearly perfect for that. Although there could be more potential in that aspect, many chances have lost to show how obsessed the characters were. The love story may seem sudden, but as a delusional, I love thinking that the tension started ever since the subtle but overly noticing of each other. Which was so unnecessary if you think of it deeply. I wish more books like this will be made in the future.
