Good, solid read. Vintage Signet regency stuff that still holds up very, very well today.

Along with the lovely romance there are two mysteries. The resolution to one I figured out very quickly. The other was a big guess until the end.

This is a Regency romance for grownups. Joan Wolf writes just okay; nothing special and for years I refused to read her because I realized her writing was dull. But corona lock downs change everything and I find that during this quiet period these romances can keep me up until midnight. This is the first one I have read. It was written midway between her 40 or so novels and it tells the story of Gail Saunders who is sought out by the Earl of Savile to accompany him to the reading of the will of George, Lord Devane due to the legacy he has left her son, Nicolas. What is different in this romance is that quite early on, Gail becomes Savile's mistress. The sex scenes are written with just enough detail and not too much. There is the mystery of the legacy and another mystery that Savile must solve which of course he does. Hopefully, Wolf's writing gets better later on.

When her son receives an unexpected inheritance, a widow's life becomes entangled with that--and the family of--an earl (3 points!), soon leading to romance. Unfortunately someone appears to be trying to kill her son. Written in first person (only Wolf can pull this off), a wonderful Regency romance from one of the queens of the genre.

A 2-star read, with a whole extra star for the cover

Joan Wolf is pretty reliable, and The Arrangement is not a bad read, with a slightly unusual plot. But the characters didn't really grab me, for some reason; not a keeper.
