As CJ Sansom had sadly recently died I picked up the next Shardlake and I’m so glad I did. I think this was my favourite so far. Shardlake and Barack go to York as they have some business with a royal tour up there, however also end up getting involved with a man who is being imprisoned for treason and a mystery with secret documents. I love the dynamic between Shardlake and his assistant, which isn’t always easy and the complexity of the characters’ feelings is delightful. Shardlake also makes some other interesting friends in this one — can’t wait to read the next.

3.5 stars. This was a bit slower paced than the spectacular Dark Fire and at times the story felt like it was really meandering. I guessed the culprit fairly early on but still enjoyed the mystery, tension, and the detailed descriptions of England during the time of Henry Viii.
