I really struggled to get into this. It didn't pick up for me until the halfway point and even then it wasn't enough for me to really enjoy it.

I'm a bit shocked that I liked this, judging by the last Veronica Roth book I read...But this was good! It did feel a bit like a Shatter Me ripoff at times (Cyra and Akos kind of felt like if Juliette and an Adam/Warner mix were given each other's personalities). But the world and plot made up for that. Akos's fate does have me scared for the sequel, though. I'm praying Roth had learned her lesson from Allegiant.

A complicated epic fantasy set in another world by the author of the popular Divergent series. I enjoyed it, though I'm not a big fan of epic fantasies - those who are will like it even more! Here's my full review:

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

I wasn't feeling the sci-fi element. Also, the narrator was 14, and I didn't love listening to a little boy's internal monologue. Hopefully he ages up in later chapters, but I'm not feeling it. Return to the library for now. Maybe I'd read at a different point.

sigh. this was a tough one to star. how fast i got through the first 70% of the book, how long it took the remaining 30%... i was really into the worldbuilding and the intriguing way of the marks and the way cyra and akos grew closer, that when they finally confessed to themselves they liked the other, it just fell so flat. and at the same time the storyline had so much going on that that just felt mushed in together as if 'oh right let's sprinkle this in here and there as well'.

This book was a good classic YA sci-fi. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narration, but it wasn’t anything special. I can probably go without reading book 2, because it feels a bit predictable. Good book for the classroom library.

Ugh this book was tedious. It was flat and moved like molasses. In fact I could sum up the entire plot in 5 sentences...not 500 pages. And the names!!! I felt like every proper noun she grabbed a handful of scrabble tiles and created a name. Also can't forget the ridiculous insta love. Combined with the racist, ableism, and self harm undertones that many other reviewers have mentioned in more knowledgeable ways than I could, this book is a HARD PASS. Sorry Veronica at least we will always have Divergent.
