Good concept, bad execution. Everything moves way too quickly

— this was slightly edited, i actually left this review a mess (and i'm pretty sure it's still a mess, but y'know- a slightly more organized mess) a while back and decided to expand some points and actually revise it cuz i've watched the movie again today and it made me cry happy tears. my points are pretty much all here. i miss shun and mio so muuuch

Umibe no Étranger is a soft and wholesome short story of flimsy feelings and troublesome hearts. Four chapters of luscious art and wonderfully charming characters in, and this manga already had my heart warming to its dead, rotten core. I love Shun and Mio so much, my cheeks hurt more and more with each panel- the mundanity of their relationship is a pleasant surprise. This story isn't really anything unique or stellar, but its profoundness and characters are enough to tug on the heartstrings. The verythe characterization wasn't going to be the best, so it didn't really surprise me that Mio's character fell a bit meh compared to Shun. This is also an unpopular opinion- but I love how cautious Shun is, it makes sense because of their ages and the prejudices he faced.

Truth be told, this is one of the type of stories where the art is very pretty beyond compare but the story really doesn't live up that much. Like, this story has a very soft and sensual ambiance, the art style is absolutely gorgeous, and the characters are likeable but there's actually little to no plot. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this if you're looking for something serious or want something jam-packed, but if you're looking for a little fluff with a itty bitty sprinkle of angst- then this is the perfect manga for you.

PS.
I actually share a very tricky relationship with this manga rn so I'm very careful with recommending it, but if you're into soft and fluffy stories I'd say go for it and don't expect too much. There's also a sequel to this which was a little better than this one. The shift to maturity was very nicely done while maintaining the soft qualities of this manga. I've read it some time last year but placed in on-hold along with the several other ongoing mangas I had on tab but yeah,, it's awesome especially if you love this manga.

Hmm. Unsure how I feel about this one, but I will pick up the next volume when it comes out.

The art style was beautiful. The scenery and setting had such a cozy and chill vibe to them which I enjoyed very much. And I loved Eri and her girlfriend Suzu, we didn't see much of their relationship but it seemed very healthy and built on trust and communication.
What I had a problem with was that Mio pushed for sex even though Shun emphasized many times that he wasn't in the mood. If someone tells you they don't want to have sex with you you have to respect that. As a reader you don't get to know if Shun is asexual or just not into sex that much, but it also doesn't really matter: Mio shouldn't have been so pushy, no matter why Shun didn't want to have sex. Also Sakurako was kinda just there to add some drama. I don't like the miscommunication trope that much either, please just communicate with each other and express your feelings in a healthy way.
I liked that the manga explored themes like loneliness and the struggle of accepting your sexuality because you're scared of what others think. I can relate to that and I liked that they still made it work, despite their fear of not being accepted. As a queer person that was an important and positive message :)

I also read part of its ongoing sequel and I must say, I find this manga quite biphobic lol. There are things it does well, like dealing with homophobia and internalised homophobia and I didn’t mind its portrayal of sex, but holy crap the way Mio’s sexuality was portrayed was kind of disturbing

Nice art but terrible story. The main couple didn't seem into each other at all. Their interactions were cringey and awkward, and not in a cute way. This book had the most pathetic, not-hot, embarrassing sex scenes of anything I have ever read. One of the worst things I read all year.

This manga started off rough, I'll admit. You could honestly tell the mangaka meant for it to be a standalone at first, but with the confirmation at the end, it's being turned into a series.

I wasn't a huge fan of how Mio pressured Shun into having sex so much, but otherwise, the rest of the manga was okay. But for those who aren't a fan of that either, just be aware that it does take up a chunk of the story.
