I did not enjoy this like I thought I would. i'm sorry to say I think the author lacked the skill to evoke the places she was mudlarking and so it just got to be pretty much the same story in each place. My mother would take us out searching for antique bottles and broken crockery in the woods and behind old farmhouses when i was a child in Connecticut and honestly it was magical to hike into the woods to do those excavations and to find things and clean them and think about them. I was hoping to get that from this book but I did not.

I started out enjoying this read but in the end just didn't care much about what the author had to say. There's only so many mentions of mud a reader can take before it gets boring!

I really enjoyed Maiklem’s writing style, as well as her mix of personal anecdotes with the history of London and the Thames.

A beautiful and informative account of the author's obsession of searching for historic yet everyday objects that wash up along the shores of the Thames. The book begins at Teddington and ends at the Thames estuary. Inspiring and meditative. This made me wish that I lived in London so I could take up this fascinating hobby.

Super interesting way to look at the history of london. Enjoyed this.

What an absolutely wonderful read. I listened to this over a week or so on journeys too and from work and I found it enthralling and utterly absorbing. I grew up near to the Thames but higher than its tidal reaches, it has a mesmeric pull that you can't deny. Maiklem describes this and brings it alive through the secrets and objects that it gives back to us on her mudlarking exploits on the foreshore. I also follow her on instagram and I urge you to take a look as once you start to see these objects and look up their history, you will be hooked to!

Lara Maiklen writes about being a mudlark or someone who scavenges in river mud for items of value. She walks the Thames searching for things that she finds interesting like buttons, pottery etc. Fascinating to read and a fun way to learn history.

I read an advance copy and was not compensated.
