I'm bummed because I love the cover of this book but the writing was almost laughable how much it left to be desired. Vampires during the Civil War is an interesting idea but the dialogue in this was just......not good.
I wish i dnf'd this one. It was a rough going through, so many problems that I struggled through. My main problem was Jerusalem herself. She was not an enjoyable character and there was more discriminations through her words and actions than there was towards her. The only reason I kept going was because I loved Alexei and needed to make sure he ended in a good and safe relationship. He had already been in a very bad, abusive relationship and Jerusalem was a toxic person! I'm not too pleased they are still together, but at least she finally recognized her faults in the last 10 pages.
Another concern was that I was not prepared or warned about the expanse of mythical creatures in this world. As far as I knew, only vampires existed and though it may have been built that way to surprise the reader, it confused me more than a pleasant surprise. It felt like the other supernatural creatures were just there to show how awful vampires are which is discriminatory.
The concept was so cool, it just fell flat for me.

Though heavy at times, a YA palate cleanser was what I needed. The audio was well done and made it easy to follow along through time changes. Shorter chapters would have helped a bit, and the modern slang took me out of the story a few times, but I love a good revenge story. I'd absolutely love a story about the Saints and how they came to be.
Looking at some reviews of this book, there were some people complaining that the slavery parts were unnecessary and a bit much 🙄 This is why we need books with broader representation.

Ok I’ll start off by saying I ate this book up. The writing is kinda bad and the author’s choices took me out of it from time to time, but I found myself really wanting to know what happened, which I think is what’s important. I’ve read tons of well-written books that I did not care about.
It’s choppy and jarring sometimes, the way the characters interact with each other is really inconsistent. Also the constant mentioning of how tiny the FMC is got super annoying, but that’s a personal problem.
I didn’t go into this knowing it was YA, so I was wanting more from the romance that I was never going to get. Now that I know it’s YA it’s fine but I was definitely frustrated at the end. That said, I loved the characters and would prolly read more if there was more.
