I read this to help the librarians determine where to place it in the collection. My vote is adult because the protagonist gets high (on catnip) and kills people! Lots of people. Volume two also starts with cats nearly having sex. I know, I know, they're just cats. But still..

If you're looking for reading about (human) samurai, I recommend [b:Lone Wolf and Cub, Omnibus 1|17131962|Lone Wolf and Cub, Omnibus 1|Kazuo Koike|http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1363840778s/17131962.jpg|3063096].

Edit: The unanimous vote was to place this in the adult collection!

Interesting premise but maybe the translation I read is what made it a little bit disjointed for me.

It's like ruroni kenshin, but if he was a cat, and also addicted to catnip and hallucinating.

The art is pretty neat and it's a good set-up for the world building, but at times the saturation of the dark ink made it very difficult to read the expressions on the cats' faces. I really had to study at times to figure out who was talking and what they were feeling, which is a shame because the artist put a lot of effort into making the cats expressive.

Stray cat Norachiyo wanders the land, masterless, looking for his final resting place while others hunt him for a bounty.

In a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic cats, Norachiyo is a ronin, a warrior without a master. His sword is his only possession, tied with a bell given to him by his former master. He's basically Toshiro Mifune as a cat on two legs.

Norachiyo does the traditional samurai good deeds, like killing a lord and having it out with thugs in the street. Unlike other samurai, this one is addicted to catnip and suffers from nightmares of the red warrior who killed his master.

The story is good and the character of Norachiyo slowly becomes an interesting character. I was undecided about reading the rest of the series but I was hooked by the end of the volume. The art is good for the most part, although the action scenes are very hard to follow.

Nekogahara volume 1 is good and I want to read the rest but it's not good enough for the next volume to jump to the front of the line, if that makes sense. 3 out of 5 stars.

Think of the bloodiest, most ruthless, death-cursed samurai tale, add in every cat pun ever and you've got yourself a story that works. Really well. For any cat fancier with an understanding of the darker sides of felines.

Gorgeous art. The fighting bits are hard to follow though.
