I'm 140 pages in and I'm bored. Both timelines are being dragged out so slowly and I just don't really care. I'll keep this on my shelf in case I want to revisit it one day, but I currently don't think Kate Morton is a good fit for me - I read another book (The House at Riverton) by her years ago and was underwhelmed by that, too.

This book felt little too long, like there were too much filler descriptions. There were so many jumps in time that I often lost track of what time the chapter I was reading was set in. I really couldn't connect with Jess, and I hated Nora. Especially as the book progressed and we see just how much she lied to everyone, how selfish she was, and how much she gaslit Polly. I feel like after all of the secrets are revealed, Jess and Polly should have had more closure. Nora influenced Jess to make her hate Polly, and I feel like Jess should have been crawling on her hands and knees to beg forgiveness from Polly. Also, I feel that Polly should have been a much more fleshed out character.
Yet, despite all of the above, it wasn't a bad read. It kept me coming back for more. I may have guessed the first twist. but I didn't see the last twist coming.

So good. I found the prologue confusing, but once I read it three times and got the dates sorted out, I hated to put this book down. One part of the mystery, I figured out early on, but there were twists and turns in how the story got there that I did not see coming.

This was a slow burn. The pay off at the end was worthwhile but a slog to get there.
An editing pet peeve was how they handled the book within a book. The chapters of the book she’s reading, though the length of stand alone chapters, were imbedded within the actual books chapters. Which meant some chapters were 9 pages and some where 80 (I read on my phone, so maybe not the exact numbers in the physical book but the same ratio). They should have made the inner book chapters their own chapters since the chapters had dates/headings anyway. I divided up how many chapters I needed to read each day to finish and the wonky length threw it off.
