Purtroppo il sesto volume di questa serie è stato un po' una delusione, e questo malgrado un inaspettato cambio di ambientazione, con Kate e un gruppo di mutaforma scelti in missione sul mar Rosso, una missione che tutti sanno essere una trappola... ma il premio promesso è troppo allettante, e non si sa chi stia tendendo la trappola, e a chi.
Tre clan in scontro aperto tra loro, una donna usata come pedina di scambio da un padre megalomane in cerca di una dinastia duratura, due bambini in arrivo con una ricca eredità sulla testa a cui tutti puntano.
Una città governata da un uomo illuminato e potente, servito da un clan di sciacalli.
E i nostri chiamati a fare da pacieri, consulenti e guardie del corpo della donna, in attesa del parto.
Più un nemico atteso e la cui assenza veniva commentata apertamente anche all'interno dei libri, creature antiche che si risvegliano e incubi del passato che tornano a infestare il mondo.
Un paio di situazioni da triangolo amoroso, qualche menomazione permanente, una morte eccellente.
Insomma, ci sarebbero stati tutti i presupposti per un bel libro.
Invece alcuni colpi di scena sono prevedibili, la parte in cui l'avversario di Kate si eccita combattendola è ridicola, abbiamo sì una morte eccellente e molto triste ma lo scontro decisivo appare troppo irreale, con un nemico fortissimo e che sembra imbattibile messo in fuga da Curran intento allo stesso tempo a combattere un numero imprecisato di suoi scagnozzi. Davvero?
Ma più che altro, a dar fastidio è l'inconsistenza della trama (tutto questo solo per attirarla, parlarle e separarla dal Branco? E una volta arrivata si deve mantenere la parvenza di civilità facendo finta di niente fino alla sera finale? Ma perché mai? Quale senso c'è in tutto questo?) e l'utilizzo di un assurdo deus ex-machina per sbloccare l'impasse dello scontro alla cena (e salvare i nostri), un deus ex-machina che rovina gran parte del gusto dell'intero combattimento visto che da quando compare nella sala si capisce che risolverà le cose lui stesso, per conto suo, quindi si assiste a tutto con un discreto distacco.
Ci sono cose buone (la morte non prevista, il senso di tradimento che prova Kate, i Cani) ma mi aspettavo di meglio.

I liked the relationship drama, but some things just fell through the cracks. Like why make this pact to not go anywhere alone and then leave Kate alone with Hugh? I just can’t get over that. I’m sure I missed something but it was so not on brand for anyone.

Turns out, if it's Curran and Kate, I will enjoy a book about relationship drama.
So many feels, guys. I spent the entire book feeling so bad for Kate, my guts were falling out at the end.
There is a murder mystery, weird griffin-cats, a castle in an exotic location, the most badass sword fight of all time, and tons of humour.

Book 6 in the Kate Daniels series. Kate, Curran, and the crew go on a trip overseas to get a special medical cure for loupism, and end up in a castle in eastern Europe with Hugh.
Fight scenes, some relationship tests for K&C, and a whole lot of shapeshifter posturing. This one was important for the overall storyline, it was another point of contact for Kate getting one step closer to her father. The growth in Kate and her powers was also key.
But overall the communication issues and the fraught nature of almost the entire book made this one less fun of a ride than most of the rest of the series so far. More downs than ups. Looking forward to future books hopefully having a few more bright spots... or at least dark humor to make up for it.
