These books honestly get better every time I read them.
Also: Hugh. I'd been waiting for him to make his big entry since the Games and he didn't disappoint at all. I mean, right?

Things really evolved in this book and I couldn't put it down. I kept wanting to know what was going to happen and life was being annoying and getting in the way. I think this is my favourite of the series so far.

This book packed a serious punch. I mean they all seem to pack a punch, but this one was hardcore.
First I thought I was going to lose Curran as one of my favorite heroes....I'm relieved to say that didn't happen. He had some explaining to do and he did just that.
Kate was even more badass than her usual and that's saying a lot. I just love how deadly she is. Especially as the one being perceived as the weakest of the bunch. I jut get a kick out seeing her prove that theory wrong. Every time.
I also like how this book took us somewhere different. It was like a detour from the series for a bit of change but kept all the things we love about the series. This is one of my favorite books in the series so far...looking forward to reading more.

THIS is exactly what I've wanted from a KD novel since the beginning. Plot was so tightly written. It focused on one mythology and the central mystery kept me guessing. Genuinely did not see the Hugh twist coming, couldn't figure out how Lorelai fit into everything, couldn't figure out what Curran was doing. Cool to see all of those plot points come together without an overwhelming amount of moving parts.
I loved knowing that it was a trap from the beginning but not being able to see the big picture. The road trip (boat trip?) was such a fun idea and the Europe/Castle setting was a nice change of pace. Throws all the characters out of their normal routine and comfort zone and makes it difficult for them to even communicate.
The new characters worked so well in this story and provided a lot of conflict and variety. Old characters were well-utilized and well-balanced. Unlike the last few books, none of the characters annoyed me, or overstayed their welcome, or felt uncharacteristically aggressive.
I LOVED seeing everyone on guard duty. It provided a lot of fun and short action scenes. The tension felt genuinely high stakes and kept me invested in the plot, the interpersonal conflicts, and the action.
Lamassu were a great enemy. Interesting and unique and threatening. Astany and Astamur (and the cave side plot) were a great addition. Kate finally gets a few hours of peace, fantasizing about running away from all of her responsibilities. Astamur in particular is super interesting - hematches everyone's energy, doesn't attack first, but has a lot of power to due so if pushed.
I'm so, so happy we're finally moving forward on the Roland plot. I somehow didn't see the twist with Hugh/Megobari coming, but I'm so glad it wasn't just a random character. Hugh and Kate's dynamic is so interesting because of their similar upbringing. It's so interesting that Hugh points out Roland might not even want to kill her. Has she been on the run her whole life for no reason? Or has all of her training made her the first offspring he actually values?
I can't wait to learn more about Kate's power over the vampires. That last vampire seemed to recognize something in her. But aren't the Iron Dogs & Roland's MotD supposed to be super powerful? She seemed to defeat quite of a lot of them in the final battle.
As always, Barbaras and Derek are my favorite side characters. I do want to see some growth from them, but their sidekick plot lines never get old. I'm glad Kate & Curran finally talked about the future since they haven't had much of a chance to until now.
I'm sort of sad Aunt B is dead, but I also felt like her storyline was starting to get stale. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Clan Bouda - Andrea is second, but she doesn't have anywhere near the knowledge and experience B did.

I can't wait to see how Desandra fits in with the rest of the pack (especially Jennifer). Also thrilled that Christopher has a real place in the story. He wasn't just a plot device, he was central to saving the day. I love that Kate's small(ish) act of kindness saved Maddie and potentially hundreds of others down the line.Lamassu were a great enemy. The tension more like aggravation between the alpha and the consort could've been resolved over an honest conversation. BUT, where's the fun in that? A classic misunderstanding gone wrong. As a messy scorpio reader, I thrived in tension. This has been a fun one.
