The first time I read this book I had some issues with it. If you do to I highly suggest re-reading it! I still had some issues but I actually paid attention to the last part of the book and really enjoyed it!

A better review to come once I have time!!

Again, really enjoyed this one but did have a couple of issues with it.

Firstly, I know this was meant to speed things up and get some action happening, but I wasn't a big fan of how Andrea and Raphael's relationship was suddenly drama free again! In the last book, they had a really big falling out because of Andrea not leaving The Order of Merciful Aid, and now they're engaged and happily together. I literally went back to the last book and searched for 'engaged' and 'proposed' and there was nothing - I didn't realise that it was just a big change that wasn't going to be explored in this book and was explained away in a sentence. It's not a huge plot-altering issue, but it would have been nice to have seen how they got back to their couple status because it did leave me pretty confused.

I also felt like there was a bit too much 'deus ex machina' going on with that tiny dude at the end. His name begins with A I think? Seems like a likeable enough person and I am looking forward to seeing him again in Book 7, but felt like a very convenient character. Even more so was Christopher. Even overlooking the short guy, Christopher was definitely a convenient plot device with his ability to create panacea, I'm really hoping there's more to him which, again, will come up in Book 7 which I am already part way through because I'm absolute trash with zero concept of effective prioritising.

I did enjoy the high stakes of this novel though, and hate-loved the angst between Curran and Kate. I knew Curran had some kind of plan but that he withheld it from Kate because she can't lie was an interesting choice. She's been capable of not letting Julie know the full extent of their blood bond for a while now which is arguably a greater secret, but this secret would have been too much? I'll go along with it because it made for a good plot but it did seem a bit out of character in my opinion.

But Hugh, oh my days, I can't be the only one who was sort of rooting for him and Kate, even just for a moment? Loved it and I really don't want him to die. I'm also getting to the point where I don't really understand why Roland or Kate need to kill each other so I hope that confusion is rectified too. But more Hugh? Yes please.

Onto book 7 which I think is where this series naturally concludes? I'm really looking forward to seeing how the whole story comes together. Not sure I'll read beyond that because I am slightly worried it will be trying too hard to create a storyline as dramatic as this one concerning Roland over 7 books.

Lol i hate myself. I know I said I’d stop reading but I haven’t and I’m currently 23.7% in. Goodbye degree. Goodbye success. Hello complete guilty pleasure in the form of paranormal romance novels.

Odd to have missed this one and read it after having read the next one but so much happens, so quickly, that it was still a griping delight to read. Emotional deaths and battles, some fun relationship drama between Kate and Curran and overall another great installment to the series. Also nice to see Christopher's rescue and the short story of Saiman's rescue as well.

I love me some Kate Daniels, but I agree with other reviewers that the whole separation thing was pretty contrived. Like, just tell her. Jeeze. Still a fun ol' roller coaster though!

Finished and loved this addition to the series. Even if I repeatedly wanted to throw it across the room.

Curran dropped a few notches in my love from this book though. I still love Kate and all the quirky characters surrounding her. Great story, just be ready for some angst and insanity.

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve read a book in the main Kate Daniels series and while I seriously considered finishing the series out after finally reading Gunmetal Magic, I also change my mind like the weather, so I wasn’t sure if I actually would pick up where I left off with Magic Rises being next. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have actually started it — not because I don’t love this series, I’m just a weirdo who puts things off not matter how much I want to do them, but I had checked out Small Magics and a couple of other novellas from the library and I didn’t realize at the time that I would need to have read Magic Breaks because we get scenes of Jim and Curran’s POVs in Small Magics that take place in Magic Breaks. Though to be the fair, the synopsis does say that we would get Curran’s POV from Magic Bites to Magic Bleeds. I went back and forth on if I should read Magic Rises and Magic Breaks or just go ahead and finish off Small Magics since I didn’t think it would be too spoilery. I hemmed and hawed before picking the latter option and almost immediately got exposed to a huge spoiler that I didn’t see coming, though I will say after reading Magic Rises, it’s actually not that surprising. I was just going to give up and save Small Magics for another time, but I saw that I should have enough time to read both books and finish Small Magics on time and I just couldn’t not do that. So that’s my long-winded explanation of how I come to read Magic Rises at this moment, but I think it’s time to talk about the book itself.

Man, I did not know that Ilona Andrews could hurt my heart the way they did in this book, but wow, it was unexpected. I mean, that’s not to say that I haven’t ever felt sad for the characters in any of their books because I definitely have, but my heart just really hurt for Kate in this book. Even though, logically I knew that she and Curran were going to be okay in the end, my feelings didn’t care about what was rational and I couldn’t remain unaffected. However, don’t let that scare you off of Magic Rises because it is one hundred percent worth reading! Seriously, once I got past page two hundred, I could not pull myself away and I stayed up way too late finishing this book. And when I say too late, it was almost seven in the morning when I finished and while I’m a little tired, I have no regrets.

Now if you’re not a big fan of angst, I know what I said might be a little worrying to you, but as someone who also doesn't care for angst, I just want to say that while Ilona Andrews may have made my heart pound and drop to my stomach in moments, I feel like when they did hit us with that, they always managed to do something that distracted from that hurt and they gave us a totally epic fight scene that if you are having some nonpacifist-like feelings, I think it will satisfy those thoughts.

I don’t know if I can say that Magic Rises is my favorite Kate Daniels book I’ve read so far, but it is definitely the best as of right now. It’s amazing and hard and heartbreaking, but also funny and engaging and exciting. I’m so glad I read it now and I loved this book and I’m looking forward to continuing on with Magic Breaks next!
