Loved the change of scenery, sailing to Europe! When I said “shit is going to hit the fan” in the last review I did not expect Hugh to be...how he was. I thought he was basically going to be a classic bad guy general for her father. Nor did I expect Christopher, major deaths, and newly crippled packmates. I’m happy with all of these surprises, and looking forward to more!

Sometimes you don't realize how much you've missed a series until you go back to it. This was like a breath of fresh air.

The covers of these books slay me.

This book started off slow to me and I wasn’t at all interested until there was a plot twist. It would be a spoiler to share but then it was non stop action and intrigue. Gotta love a fluff read.

There's not much to say about this book, because honestly if you've read anything by Ilona Andrews you know they're all amazing. Even further, if you've read anything in the Kate Daniels series, you know that nothing in this series can be horrible. The same can be said for Magic Rises.

We pick up the story with Kate again living in the Keep, and as the description says, she and Curran are having trouble stopping the kids in the Pack from going loup. The only way to fix it is to answer a request from a European Pack who has it. Of course they're headed into a trap, but once you find out how serious a trap it is, you'll know how freaking serious this book really is.

I love Kate, and I love Curran, and this book has those scenes that you remember made you fall in love with them from the beginning. Everyone you love is in this book, Derek, Aunt B, and more characters are introduced that you know you can grow to like. That being said, this book will test your nerves. It took my heart and yanked it into multiple directions and literally made me super sad, and super happy and just all around crazy.

This book chewed me up and spit me out, and then kissed all my wounds back together. It was one of my favorites of the series. I am absolutely going to be reading it again, probably in audio format this time. The audiobooks of this series are really good for those of you who like audiobooks. The narrator is pretty good and I love them too.

If you've been thinking about this series, give it a chance (and give it more than just one book to feel the love.) If you've already read this series thus far and are thinking about this next book, stop thinking and pick it up already. It's great. I give it 5 big huge stars!

Kate & Curran encounter new shapeshifter creatures while brokering a deal between two European packs. Loved seeing her outside of Atlanta and showing off her sword skills to a new nemesis. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

In an earlier review of this series, I criticized how Kate the badass had turned into Kate the lovesick who fell for a big strong man who must keep her safe at all costs. I am still struggling with that underlying theme here. This book started out way less focused on the Kate/Curran relationship, but then ended up being mostly about that relationship. That's not bad, but I was fooled for a bit into thinking we had moved past some of that big focus. Maybe I got distracted by reading Andrea's spinoff (Gunmetal Magic, where it focused on her relationship with Rafael, though I have come to appreciate their relationship a bit more than Kate/Curran).

Anyway, what still bothers me about this, and in fairness, I saw this a bit in Andrea's story, is that Kate will get into some situation (her job is a bit dangerous, after all), and it's just a matter of getting Curran pissed off enough that suddenly he turns into Rambo and is capable of killing anything because he's so mad. That happened in past books too. If he's capable of doing that, why wait till she is to the brink of death and he is so raging mad and hysterical, why not just go in there and kill the bad guy and be done with it?

Now that is not to say that Kate is not a total badass capable of holding her own. Because she is. Though the theme of "I'm dead, this is it for real this time" being in about every battle, I've gotten numb to that, it's overused. I like see her power, magic and skills overall develop through the series, though it climaxed in this book with an extremely strange and, dare I say in a fantasy story, far-fetched scene involving a bubble. Not to spoil anything, but that was odd.

That all being said, and sometimes in spite of myself, I couldn't put this book down. The relationship story happening in this book is pretty big stuff, and sucked me in pretty well. The way it's written really gets your blood pumping, for better or worse.

There are also really strong non-romantic relationships happening here, I did like the "you are pack" stuff that's carried across a couple of books now, but is illustrated more here. I've really gotten to know these characters quite well, and really really like most of them. I was so extremely sad when a major character was killed, and there were some scary touch and go moments with a few others.

I often gauge how good a book is by how much I can't put it down, or how late past bedtime I stay up to finish it, so I had to give this one 5 stars for that reason alone.

I'm not sure I can give a coherent review of this book because all that is going through my mind is "I loved this book so much!" Everything I love about this series is present: action, humor, Curran (although I did want to punch him occasionally). I finished the book immediately wanting to start it again, which says more than anything how much I enjoyed it. I am anxiously awaiting the next book!
