She does a great job explaining how important her oath snd integrity are yo her and why she put country over party. However, there seems to also be a lack of self reflection and awareness of how decisions her dad made created the environment for Trump to gain power. She also cannot seem to grasp that the very policies she holds dear also created the social environment that creates the populist movement. I am curious if she will ever be able to reflect on that portion and look critically at the policies she is adament are best are the very ones harming her former constituents still, to this day.
Appreciate the detailed facts and receipts in the narration of the events that led to January 6th and the subsequent response. I wouldn’t call this a personal memoir but rather a historical one. Hoping for well informed voting Americans - definitely worth the listen especially with being from a very conservative politician.
“Our words matter, and we need to take care to be truthful and not increase the peril.”
“This was feeling more like middle school than the US Congress.”

It’s self serving in the sense that she’s constantly just acting like she is self righteous in a way. I did gain a lot of respect and ALWAYS country > party. Definitely helped put some more things into perspective for me and I liked how they used audio clips where there would normally be transcripts in the book.
I disagree w her politics. But, everyone should read this book. She along w the Jan 6 committee has done a great service for our country.

Listening to this in the first 2 weeks of the second T term has been very difficult. Like Liz Cheney, I love the Constitution and know we can have policy differences but what happened on 1/6/21 is not about that at all. It was a solid read though I cannot call it "good;" important feels more correct. Every American should read it but sadly those who attack Cheney for her courage would never do it.
“Because America’s democratic system has endured longer than any in history, it can be easy to take its survival for granted. Sometimes people would tell me that January 6 wasn’t so bad, because, after all, our institutions had held. I would remind them that our institutions don’t defend themselves. The institutions held only because of a handful of Americans who did their duty and refused to yield to Donald Trump’s pressure. And because of the men and women in law enforcement who literally defended our democracy when it came under attack.” -Chapter 53
Incredible. I had forgotten about so much that happened during that clown’s time in office. It’s unbelievable, actually. I do not agree with the Republican Party policies or views - it is a completely different party now - but respect Liz Cheney and the others involved.
For someone who thinks Dick Cheney's policies were abhorrent and is polar opposite of Liz Cheney's ideology, I didn't find this to be a difficult listen. She includes many audio clips of the Jan. 6th hearings, which were riveting, and maybe a few too many of her own speeches (though it's hard to listen to her monotonous, sing-song voice that long). But overall, this is very well-structured and a needed resource to never forget what happened on Jan. 6th. I wish more people would read it who are on the fence - there's just no denying Trump's role.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or like one with the truth and some tea to spill…BAYBAYYYYY Ms. Cheney did not come to play with y’all! She is telling it all about January 6th, Kevin McCarthy and his lack of a spine, and the bed of lies and blind eyes that has turned the GOP into a party unrecognizable to true conservatives. Now, I may not agree with most of her political stances, and she did vote for The Felon in the first place, and voted with his political agenda 93% of the time, but when she saw that this dude was batcrap crazy and that the GOP had lost all sense of morality and integrity to blindly follow and push his insane rhetoric, she said “no more!”. She is a true example of what it means to put country before party. Her and her family love this country like a fat kid loves cake! She could have toed the line and kept her political career intact, but she actually has a conscience, and let’s face it, her daddy is Dick Cheney so to paraphrase K. Dot, “she gone be alright!” Whether you are a firm liberal, a moderate conservative, or even a MAGA-nut, read this book. It will have you jaw-dropped throughout!
Everyone who is voting in primary elections and the General Election in 2024 needs to read this book.
