It's clear Liz Cheney is an American patriot who put our country over partisan politics.

It's also clear that she could afford to do so given her family's wealth. Early in the book, Cheney states that she had private security take her to the Capitol on January 6. Her family's wealth and connections to retired Secret Service staff allowed her to take a stand against the 45th president while others went along with the party because they were afraid of his supporters' vitriol against them and their families.

There are a few Democrats that Cheney admires, Pelosi and Raskin, given the number of times they appear. It seems she has less respect for Thompson and Schiff given the few mentions here.

One thing that seems to be missing is some background about the GOP's penchant for rioting during presidential ballot counting. She has left out any mention of the 2000 Brooks Brothers riot during a Florida recount.

This is an important but chilling book. Calmly and clearly it relates the events in Washington DC on January 6th 2020, and analyses exactly how these events, and actions taken by the then President, constituted an assault on American democracy. No-one can be left in doubt that there are ways according to the Constitution that election results can be challenged (through the judicial system) but that Congress has no say in the matter apart from officially declaring the result. To do so would be tantamount to disenfranchising the electorate. The judicial challenges were made and rejected in all but one case. Nevertheless the then President tried to force Congress into overturning the result, culminating in the events of January 6th 2020.
The first part of the book describes these events, while the second part concentrates on the Select Committee proceedings which elicited much of this information. The Congressional Republican Party does not come well out of this, apparently preferring to kowtow to the former President than say and do what their consciences must surely have urged them by standing up for the Constitution and democracy.
Liz Cheney should be applauded for her calm and rational exposition. One is just left wondering why the former President is still free to walk the streets, let alone be a potential presidential candidate.

My initial reason for purchasing this book was to demonstrate support for the courage of Congresswoman Cheney, but I decide that I should read the book. It is written in a very clear and straightforward manner that makes it very readable. Its importance for the future of our country cannot be underestimated. May her courage be recognized by all Americans as we move forward into this election year of 2024.

Well-written and well read. Too bad the people who should read this won't, it could change their life.

A readable book, sometimes repetitive with its virtue signaling. I bought and read it not to put money in Liz Cheney's pocket but because I wanted to learn more about the select committee's work behind the scenes. I have not read the select committee's report, I should do that.
My biggest question: Why is so little said of Chairman Bennie Thompson's role? Did Nancy Pelosi ask or expect Liz Cheney and her husband Phil Perry to lead the way in mapping out and structuring the Committee's hearings, which seems to be what happened? if so, why? because they're Republicans and therefore slightly less to be distrusted by Trump's base? So little is said about Chairman Thompson that the implication is that he was essentially a bystander.
My other main question is, Who is Liz Cheney, really? She portrays herself as a mom who thinks like a mom, and that's just hard to believe, there is the occasional glimpse of warmth but she seems to be made of granite. She adores her father, in my opinion one of the most despicable men ever to have held public office. She's clearly a diehard Conservative who thinks Democrats are out to "ruin people's lives" by addressing climate change. (If she represented South Carolina would Big Tobacco ever have been held accountable? A moot point, obviously, and of course she seems to embody whiteness itself so hard to think of her representing any place with a significant Black population.)
I think she keeps a lot of the story to herself, and that's understandable, but I'm curious if we'll ever hear more about her efforts from more transparent sources.

Cheney adds a new and compelling view of the events on and surrounding January 6 and the motives of the key players, including President Trump. Having read Cassidy Hutchinson's account, Cheney's perspective of how Hutchinson's involvement provides even greater context to Hutchinson's story. A powerful accounting of the events and the investigation into them.

This book is an absolute MUST read for anyone who cares about our democracy, rule of law and Truth. Such a wonderful chronicle of facts and events of a terrible chapter in our American history. Thank God for people like her who care about the Truth and are willing to do what is right and necessary.
