This book is an account of the insurrection on Jan 6th and the following investigation by a House Committee. It is a blistering indictment of the Republican capitulation to Donald Trump complete with well documented references and quotes.
Cheney comes off as an extremely principled and no-nonsense person who doesn’t have time for bullshit. Her politics are classic conservatism and her shock and dismay at seeing her fellow Republicans completely abandon the same principles is palpable.
Even with all the media coverage, there was much about that day and the following investigation that I never heard about or understood. I have heard the argument that Trump never pre-meditated that the rally would turn violent, nor that he instigated anything through his speech. The evidence against that is damning, including that members of Congress (including Cheney) had upped their security detail in preparation for the 6th, and that one of the speakers at the rally (Brooks) who “exhorted the crowd, ‘the fight begins today’”, was himself wearing body armor because of what the Trump camp anticipated would happen. Beyond that, there are transcripts and interviews that confirm Trump begin planning these actions well before Jan 6th.
One thing I didn’t appreciate about the House Committee hearings is that all of the interviews they did were with Republicans who were already in the Trump camp. All testimony was from Trump supporters and politicians to ensure that there would be no claims that it was partisan dealing and that it was all Democrats who hate Trump making false claims. The mountains of evidence and the testimony was all from people in the Trump White House and circle of trust.
I don’t agree with Cheney’s politics but I do think she is honest and principled and totally dedicated to the survival of our democracy. This book was a sober reminder that Donald Trump is a danger to our democracy and Cheney brought the receipts to back that claim up.

this is a very educational book, and as much as i don't agree with liz cheney's positions, this is a must read. this book really shows how the republican party was split by trump's presidency into republicans and trump republicans. again, as much as i dislike cheney and her opinions, you cannot deny that it was brave of her to stand against her own party for what was right regarding the insurrection. and as a woman in politics too, she deserves her credit. however, she's not perfect, and no politician is or should be seen as such. the idolization of reagan throughout this book??? gross. i hate ronald reagan. also, cheney goes into being against election deniers and forming connections despite party alignments to stand against trump and his supporters, but cheney was in support of trump up until the 2020 election. it cannot be forgotten that although she stood for what is right, she was a helping hand in his administration. regardless, cheney does an excellent job in criticizing her own party for supporting trump in his efforts to overrule the people in the election and of warning of the dangers of trump
