Simple and short but adding so much depth an already great story, The Julian Chapter is a very welcome addition to the story of [b:Wonder|11387515|Wonder (Wonder, #1)|R.J. Palacio|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1545695751l/11387515._SY75_.jpg|16319487]
When reading Wonder it is easy to despise Julian. Sure he is a kid and we all make bad decisions when we're young, but Julian seemed to enjoy his meanness more than he should have.
In this short story we see a different side of Julian. One where we get more backstory to why he doesn't like Auggie. we see more off the influence his parents have on him which shape his character. And of course we see the aftermath of it all which we never got to see in the original book.
I think this little novella does a great job of humanizing Julian. He still won't be my favourite character, but it did a lot to make him more relatable. It is easy to read, written R. J. Palacio's wonderfully welcoming writing style. And after a reading slump, dipping my toes back into the world of Wonder was like receiving a warm hug.

I actually enjoyed hearing Julian's side. I'm glad he and Auggie made up.

one of the few, totally worthwhile, novel companions.

Among the three short wonder stories this one took my heart away. At first I also wanted to search the causes behind Julian's behavior towards Auggy which is very mean and after a while I just gave up. Because he just simply mean by nature. But the only thing I like about him is his honesty. He never denies his actin whatsoever happened. That mainly lead to another beautiful story of his sassy grandma and the namesake of Julian and Jules. Highly recommended ...specially for children.
It's great to hear Julian's version of events. You can tell why he reacted the way he did because of his life circumstances. I loved grandma's story too!
I don't know how I feel about this. The writing was great, but I can't understand the need for redemption for a character like Julian. That might be because I have spent so many years working with and caring for individuals with special needs, and have seen the lasting effects of bullying and mis treatment. I guess I liked that Julian will likely not bully someone again, but I don't really care about his personal growth, and his parents drove me up the wall. I am glad that I read the story, but I almost feel like it was written to appease readers that don't like to believe that some people are just mean. Maybe that's cynical of me? Maybe this book will help a child that is bullying to realize that they have done wrong and that they may be able to move forward from it if they can truly understand that it is wrong. I certainly hope so.
I wish he'd go back, you know! Ugh! Anyway, beautiful read. I loved it!
