It took me a while to get into this one but once I did, I really enjoyed it. The jumps in time that took some concentration, paid off and made sense in the flow of the narrative. Chronologically told, this would have been a lesser novel for me.

It honestly took me awhile to finish this book because I found it very dull to read. What I mean by that is there isn't really a specific conflict in the world that our narrator is struggling with and there isn't really an end point to the story that's being told. This story is very much one of an internal adventure to growth and understanding of and within the world around our narrator. I did enjoy that not many of the characters were enjoyable to read and felt like it added to the internal struggle of our narrator. I really only liked him and Brian tbh which is telling. I also think it's funny that while many of the trivialities the people in the story go through are completely absurd to the current times, there are a lot of similarities still. I also think most of Huxleys commentary on the state of things in the future chapters still applies today but you can see how and where we, as a society, are failing to be better than we once were. I also personally think that some of the flipping between the past to the present took away from the story for me, but I do think it was an interesting way to tell this tale.

In many ways this book reminded me of 'Point Counter Point': the same environment of frustrated intellectuals and characters without ethics, the same bombastic conversations. Yet in this novel there is a real evolution: the redemption of Anthony, as a kind of mystical reconversion. Less brightly written than PCP, but still an ingenious construction, which actually works!
A wonderful book. I have not rated it yet, because I feel like the non-linear narrative style means that a second read through is necessary to form a proper opinion of it
