The beginning was right up my alley; character-driven, atmospheric, and slightly bleak. But once it passed the 25% mark, the story became too monotonous and repetitive for my taste.
The lack of chapters also only to the sluggish pacing. Listening to it on audio also made it difficult to find natural breaks (but that's on me).
There was some tension, but it only came in the form of ominous remarks about future events. Events which, by the way, ended up being described in just a few, short sentences.
I get that the monotonous repetitions were intentionally, but it didn’t make for a very enjoyable reading experience for me personally. Apparently I want a little bit more plot from my dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories.

It came with a high praise and was also compared to the likes of ‘I Who Have Never Known Men’ which is my absolute favourite book. Sadly, it’s nowhere near it. It is dystopian only in its premise. Quite plotless and monotonous, it was a really disappointing read.
middle-aged woman finds herself alone with a dog, a cow, and a cat in an alpine valley after an invisible wall suddenly separates her from the rest (?) of humanity. what ensues is dystopian back-to-the-land cottagecore - quietly harrowing tedium interspersed with beautiful insights.

4,5. Det är otroligt hur en bok om hur en ensam person odlar potatis och tar hand om sina djur kan vara så engagerande. Marlen Haushofer är helt enkelt ett mycket skicklig författare.
