Probably my favorite of all the Cosmere shorts so far. This story is great!! It's dark and gritty and has a strong female protagonist that isn't a pretty young girl which is very rare. This story can be read completely self contained or as a tiny part of the Cosmere universe. This world is also mentioned in so many other novels, however briefly, and so often refereed to as Hell that I can't wait to see more!! Highly recommended!!

I Was Okay 🥴
-★★âœâ˜†â˜†- (2.75/5.00)
My Grading Score 55 = % (C-)
I'm not really big on short stories. Most of the time, they do not provide me with enough to pull from to get to a satisfying level of investment that I prefer to have when I read a story. I chose to read this one because I had something coming up soon and didn't want to start anything large, and it sufficed, I guess. The Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell is a short story that, by the end, I did end up enjoying to say the most. The entire thing was very fast-paced, probably a bit too face-paced for my liking, though. It introduced a chunk of characters at the start, and it felt just a bit overwhelming to me, even though there were only about four of them that the reader is really required to focus on. The story, like the name, has a veil of horrific atmosphere associated with it and had a nice chunk of brutal action scenes that's what you like. The characters were all alright. None of them were bad, but nothing worth praising.
Verdict
I wouldn't say this is one of my favorite entries into the Cosmere. The first half of the short story, I actually was not feeling it at all. But the second half, more so or less, made up for the first half. As a short story, looking at the entire thing, I can say I came think it was just okay. And if a short story horror sounds like something you're in for and one that has no important connection to the Cosmere thus no knowledge going into this is needed for you, then you can probably give this one a go.

It's a cool little well-rounded story.
Hats off to Brandon, he really did create not one, but four generations of dangerous women in one short novella.
However, while the characters are cool and the story good, it's not quite as awesome as something like [b:Perfect State|25188109|Perfect State|Brandon Sanderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1426951197s/25188109.jpg|44897384] or [b:Sixth of the Dusk|22739503|Sixth of the Dusk|Brandon Sanderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1413841537s/22739503.jpg|42280064], despite the fact that its one of Brandon's own favorites. The world isn't as ridiculously original and there isn't the usual Brandon twist in the end. (There is a twist, it just isn't the specisl kind of Brandon twist)
Maybe he's just given me the bad habit of not accepting anything short of mind-numbingly brilliant from him, so much so that something merely great just won't do it anymore!
It's his own fault, really.

It was definitely good but I like character development and 66 pages is not enough for that
